Best Features to Look for in a Cheap VPN

In order to select the best VPN, you need to make the right choice. The process involves researching each provider thoroughly, while also being aware of the features you need. Below are a few details about the distinct features to look for in the best cheap VPN.

IDS/IPS

Many websites are optimized for the purpose of stealing customer data and using it for their own benefits. Look for a cheap VPN service that boasts intrusion detection and prevention systems to receive ultimate protection against malicious programs.

URL Filtering

This feature is available in PureVPN and allows the client application to scan through a list of spammy URLs and websites to ensure the VPN blocks malicious pages upon visiting them. This protects you from frauds and other risks.

Ad Blocking

There is nothing more irritating than coming across a pile of spammy advertisements when exploring your favorite website. Make sure the cheap VPN you choose comes equipped with built-in ad-blocking features to ensure a more streamlined browsing experience.

VPN Split Tunneling

This feature in VPNs allow users to route some traffic through a VPN while letting the rest pass through the internet directly. It comes in handy for torrenting activities, as you leverage great speeds for uploading/downloading movies, TV shows, programs, games, etc.

256-Bit AES Encryption

When opting for a cheap VPN service, make sure you receive excellent encryption for protecting your personal data. The best providers will offer the highest level of military-grade 256-bit AES with 4096-bit Key Encryption.

Antivirus/Anti Malware

As a way of ensuring that your device is secure from all corners, make sure that the VPN you choose comes with built-in integration of anti-virus and anti-malware functionality. This prevents viruses from entering your OS, guaranteeing strong data protection.

Protocols Available

The VPN provider you choose must support a range of protocols. The most basic include PPTP, L2TP/IPSec, and SLL. However, if you want to leverage the best security, it is vital to select a cheap VPN service that supports OpenVPN.

Privacy & Logging

The logging activities of a VPN are crucial to determining the level of anonymity you receive. Be sure that the VPN you choose boasts a no-logging policy. If your VPN records connection information, it defies the entire purpose of using private VPNs.

VPN Servers

The amount of server locations available in multiple countries is crucial for unblocking and accessing the content. Make sure to choose a provider that offers plenty of servers for connection, like PureVPN that has servers in 140 countries worldwide.

P2P/Torrenting

One of the main reasons for anyone to use the best VPN service is to engage in P2P file sharing. The provider you choose should have an open policy that grants users to download torrents freely while receiving high-speeds.

Compatibility

Whenever you select a VPN service, make sure it offers solid apps compatibility. The best of providers will always offer dedicated applications for Windows, Linux, Mac, iOS, and Android while providing setup guides for other platforms.

Foundation of the Best Cheap VPN

While you can find tens of providers claiming to be the best affordable VPN, you need to be careful before subscribing with a certain provider.

This is because the primary purpose of acquiring a VPN should always be to protect one’s privacy and while most users do check for things like overall server counts and offered locations, military-grade encryption, protocol support, etc. they don’t usually check for factors that can definitely affect the sturdiness of a VPN in protecting user privacy.

Here, I have mentioned these best cheap internet VPN metrics for assessing if you are making the right choice or not:

1. Jurisdiction:

As a preference, I prioritize those VPNs that are  situated outside 5/9/14 Eyes alliances, as these places as far from the mandatory data retention laws and mass surveillance laws, which are the bane to digital privacy.

Safe and preferable destinations include Panama, Switzerland, Hong Kong, British Virgin Islands etc. Most Best VPNs are situated in these places for better protection of user privacy.

2. Bandwidth:

If it’s a paid VPN service, then it has to offer unlimited bandwidth period. If there is a cap on how much data a user can consume then its not worth trying.

3. Diskless VPN Feature:

Being diskless means that a providers’ servers are not, in any way, connected to a data collection device like a Hard Drive. This rules out the possibility of any user logs being kept, making the VPN extremely secure.

4. First-party DNS servers:

If a VPN does not offer its own DNS servers and is using those of some other provider, then its certainly not going to be a safe VPN. Only go for those VPNs that offer their own DNS servers.

When I conducted real-time IP leak tests on popular providers, those who were always hiding the user’s real IP and making them fully secure, overwhelmingly had their own first-party DNS servers.

5. Privacy Impact Score:

This score concerns the VPN provider’s website and whether it has anything on it that can potentially intrude on to user privacy by logging data. These intrusion tools can be cookies, trackers among others.

The score range is from 0-100, where a low score means high privacy in layman’s terminology and a high score implies that the website is not committed to protecting user privacy.

6. Obfuscation:

Obfuscation means hiding VPN traffic from prying eyes of snoopers, ISPs and government agencies by masking it as regular traffic. Mostly, VPNs have obfuscated servers within their VPN clients. If not, you can ask their chat support for more help.

The only problem: my study on obfuscation, not many providers that are cheaply priced, offer this feature, so it can be a trade-off in terms of price and value depending on what you actually want.

7. SSL rating:

Qualys SSL Labs’ SSL Server Test tool provides this SSL server rating to a provider’s website.

8. Obfsproxy Supports:

Obfsproxy is a subproject of Tor, so this metric adjudges whether a VPN provider has implemented this tool as of yet or not on its service.

9. Logging Policy of a Provider:

A VPN which keeps logs of any kinds is strictly not recommended, irrespective of how cheap it is. But it’s not that you won’t find a service that doesn’t indulge in logging and is actually highly affordable.

Many low priced VPN providers are actually quite secure on the logging front and I have featured many of them in my detailed guide on VPN logging policies. So go through it before making the final decision.

Cheap VPN vs. Free VPN

While picking a VPN, users have two options: going for a paid service or a free trial. The latter, though may sound like a good choice, will obviously lack in many areas a premium service would not.

Bear in mind that FREE VPNs still need to manage costs of the server infrastructure, hiring technical support staff, managing the website, and the development of the dedicated apps.

If the service does not charge you at all, it is a clear sign they might use other tactics like showing spammy advertising, monitoring internet usage, or selling the data to advertisers.

Downsides of “Free”

  • Speed Caps – Majority free VPN providers will set bandwidth caps. This limits users to receive speed ranging from 1-3mbps. Cheap paid services offer unlimited bandwidth speed.
  • Does Not Support P2P – Many VPN services that block torrenting on free plans will allow them on paid plans. Bear in mind downloading torrents means increased bandwidth, which is not FREE.
  • Limited Servers – Most free VPNs will have a limited selection of servers available ranging anywhere from one to ten, and these servers will usually be very crowded.
  • Bandwidth Restrictions – Most free providers will set a limit on the data you can use, which ranges to a few GB of data/month. Cheap paid services impose no such restrictions.
  • Logging of Data – There is no good way to determine whether free VPNs log your data. When you purchase a subscription, you have a contract with the VPN. This means they are bound to fulfill their promise.

Cheap Flights Booking Using Low-Cost VPNs

One of the most common hacks most people use to lower the costs of the flights is to use a VPN service and shift their location. This may seem quite complicated but is actually quite simple.

Also, opting to use this tactic is not illegal at all. The pricing of tickets is dynamic with each user in different countries seeing varied pricing. Follow the steps below to book cheap flights using a VPN:

  1. Go to any flight booking website and search for a ticket, without a VPN
  2. Once you find a suitable and cheap ticket, remember the details
  3. Clear the cache and cookies of your browser and then close/reopen it
  4. Activate the VPN and select a low-income country, like India
  5. Open an incognito tab and go to the booking website directly
  6. Search tickets for the same dates you performed a query before
  7. You will notice a considerable difference in the pricing

Best Cheap VPN FAQs

When it comes to finding the best cheap VPNs, you may come across plenty thought-provoking questions. Below I highlight the most common ones and their answers:

How Much Does ExpressVPN Cost Per Month?

If you go for the 1-month plan, you will have to pay a high $12.95. However, if you opt for longer durations like the 12-months plan, you receive a 35% discount. This lowers the monthly pricing to $8.32 per month, which means you pay a total of $99.95.

CyberGhost is completely safe to use. The provider adopts strong privacy and security technologies for ensuring complete anonymity online. At the same time, the VPN has never been caught revealing any sort of data to government agencies.

What is the Best Free VPN?

It is a tough competition between Windscribe and others. The former gains an upper-hand, thanks to its unlimited bandwidth and speed. Windscribe has a 10 GB limit on its FREE plan.

How Much Does a VPN Cost Usually?

Based on the provider you choose to sign up with, the pricing may be different for varied options. Some providers offer single plans while others offer more variations with longer duration, coupled with amazing discounts!

Are Cheap VPNs Safe to use?

In the pursuit of keeping their prices low, cheap VPNs compromise on their performance and reputation. This is why I advise only going for the 10 best cheap VPN of 2019 I listed above, as they are a few hidden gems in a pool of frauds.

What are  Renewal Prices?

There are many cheap providers that may fool customers into purchasing an annual subscription at a discounted rate. When the time comes for renewal, they then change the pricing agreement.

Others impose hidden renewal fees and additional costs that you may not know about. Therefore, it is imperative that users always read the “Terms of Service” of all providers, without exception.

This way, you can feel assured not to pay double upon the agreed rate and can make the most of the discounts/specials you get access to.

  1. Cesar Clemmons

I think Airline Companies often track that customer/user visiting to their site might be using VPN provider, whether a cheap or free.

    • Bestvpn.co

      Hey Cesar,
Yes, not just aviation firms but hundreds of other firms involved in other businesses try to track as to whether a user has deployed a VPN or not and if they find it out, they disable access for the user to their service.
You can only bypass this problem if you go for a Top VPN service, which makes detection of your connection almost next to impossible

      Thanks!

  2. Homunculus

Privacy and security isn’t something I’d want to save money on. Anyway, I think it’s not that expensive to pay just a little over 2$ a month for a 3year subscription of NordVPN. I really enjoy their app. Its easy to use and being not the most tech savvy person it’s one of the main things I was looking at when choosing a VPN. For that same reason I’d prefer to select a server by city, but it’s not something that affects the performance anyway.

    • Bestvpn.co

Hey Homunculus, great to see you commenting on our review here. Yes, you are absolutely right and we would like to second your opinion by saying that there is absolutely no compromise on security even if you have to pay extra for it. NordVPN definitely has a great deal making its 3 year plan, among the cheapest available, and its app works incredibly well too! We would like to ask you as to what speeds you are getting and which servers do you connect to when using NordVPN. User opinion is of great value to us and we might include it in our guide! Would be waiting for it definitely!

  3. Martha

I was previously with IPVanish but it was unable to unblock Netflix and even if I forgave it for that it still was too freakin slow to give a good browsing session.. I mean pathetically low… I have now switched to Torguard.. its not exactly a cheap VPN but the prices are pretty much within my range and it unblocks Netflix quite easily.. the speeds are great too.. zero throttling..

    • Bestvpn.co

Hey Martha, great to see your comment on our guide. IPVanish is a pretty good service and behaviour of that kind by this VPN is rare. Do try it again or contact its customer support for the best technical assistance in such matters. But Torguard is an equally stellar service and if you are with it at the moment, do try out its dedicated IPs for providing better security while streaming and performing other online activities.
