Cheapest VPNs vs. Free VPNs

While picking a VPN, users have two options: going for a paid service or a free trial. The latter, though may sound like a good choice, will obviously lack in many areas a premium service would not.

Bear in mind that FREE VPNs still need to manage costs of the server infrastructure, hiring technical support staff, managing the website, and the development of the dedicated apps.

If the service does not charge you at all, it is a clear sign they might use other tactics like showing spammy advertising, monitoring internet usage, or selling the data to advertisers.

Downsides of “Free”

  • Speed Caps – Majority free VPN providers will set bandwidth caps. This limits users to receive speed ranging from 1-3mbps. Cheap paid services offer unlimited bandwidth speed.
  • Does Not Support P2P – Many VPN services that block torrenting on free plans will allow them on paid plans. Bear in mind downloading torrents means increased bandwidth, which is not FREE.
  • Limited Servers – Most free VPNs will have a limited selection of servers available ranging anywhere from one to ten, and these servers will usually be very crowded.
  • Bandwidth Restrictions – Most free providers will set a limit on the data you can use, which ranges to a few GB of data/month. Cheap paid services impose no such restrictions.
  • Logging of Data – There is no good way to determine whether free VPNs log your data. When you purchase a subscription, you have a contract with the VPN. This means they are bound to fulfill their promise.

How to Make a Cheap VPN Server

For users who want to go completely manual and set up their own VPN server, you will have to spend some money. Also, the steps may vary, depending on the device you are using:

  1. Visit a cloud hosting provider like DigitalOcean and create an account
  2. Download the “Algo VPN” client from the main Github open-source page
  3. Follow the Command Lines for installing the relevant dependencies
  4. Run the installation wizard and double-click on Configuration Profiles
  5. You will now gain access to different servers for connection!

Cheap VPN Providers: FAQs

When it comes to finding the best cheap VPNs, you may come across plenty thought-provoking questions. Below I highlight the most common ones and their answers:

How much should a VPN cost?

The best providers maintain a balance in price and value. Names like PureVPN, Surfshark, and Ivacy are the best examples of budget-friendly yet feature-packed services that provide maximum anonymity, while also unblocking Netflix, BBC iPlayer, Amazon Prime, and other streaming platforms.

What is the cheapest VPN?

PureVPN is currently the most affordable VPN in the marketplace. It offers a special 1-year deal that starts at a minimal of $1.99/mo. For the low cost, you get access to a huge list of features, along with the capability of unblocking VoDs like Netflix, directly from the browser extension.

What cheap VPN works in China?

As a premium yet budget-friendly VPN, Ivacy is the only provider in the marketplace, offering a native app for Chinese residents called “IvacyPrime“. This app has a “streaming” and “social sites” mode for unblocking VoDs like Netflix and platforms like Facebook in China instantly.

Which free VPN is the best?

If I be completely honest, opting for a free VPN may not be in the best interests of your online privacy and security. These providers use shady practices for keeping up with the costs of managing a VPN service. It is better to go for a premium service, if you want maximum security.

What is the best value VPN?

Second to PureVPN, the newcomer Surfshark offers the best value for your money. It competes against top names in the marketplace like NordVPN and ExpressVPN. If you opt for their 2-year plan, you only pay a measly $1.99/mo., backed by a 30-days money back guarantee.

Are cheap VPNs safe to use?

In the pursuit of keeping their prices low, some VPNs do compromise on their performance and reputation. This is why I advise only going for the 10 best cheap VPNs listed above, as these are a few hidden gems in a pool of frauds.

What are renewal prices?

These prices basically refer to the amount incurred after you renew a subscription. Many providers will be clear about their renewal prices, while others hide it. Therefore, it is imperative that users always read the “Terms of Service” of all providers, without exception.

Wrapping Things Up

I hope this guide helps users in finding all the necessary information they need regarding the best budget VPNs. For a quick summary, PureVPN offers a premium service at the most affordable price of $1.99 on a 1-year plan.

If you face any issues or need to give better recommendations, do not hesitate on dropping a comment below. Also, do share the guide with friends and family members, looking for a budget-friendly VPN. Have a nice day ahead! 🙂

  1. Cesar Clemmons

I think Airline Companies often track that customer/user visiting to their site might be using VPN provider, whether a cheap or free.

    • Bestvpn.co

      Hey Cesar,
Yes, not just aviation firms but hundreds of other firms involved in other businesses try to track as to whether a user has deployed a VPN or not and if they find it out, they disable access for the user to their service.
You can only bypass this problem if you go for a Top VPN service, which makes detection of your connection almost next to impossible

      Thanks!

  2. Homunculus

Privacy and security isn’t something I’d want to save money on. Anyway, I think it’s not that expensive to pay just a little over 2$ a month for a 3year subscription of NordVPN. I really enjoy their app. Its easy to use and being not the most tech savvy person it’s one of the main things I was looking at when choosing a VPN. For that same reason I’d prefer to select a server by city, but it’s not something that affects the performance anyway.

    • Bestvpn.co

Hey Homunculus, great to see you commenting on our review here. Yes, you are absolutely right and we would like to second your opinion by saying that there is absolutely no compromise on security even if you have to pay extra for it. NordVPN definitely has a great deal making its 3 year plan, among the cheapest available, and its app works incredibly well too! We would like to ask you as to what speeds you are getting and which servers do you connect to when using NordVPN. User opinion is of great value to us and we might include it in our guide! Would be waiting for it definitely!

  3. Martha

I was previously with IPVanish but it was unable to unblock Netflix and even if I forgave it for that it still was too freakin slow to give a good browsing session.. I mean pathetically low… I have now switched to Torguard.. its not exactly a cheap VPN but the prices are pretty much within my range and it unblocks Netflix quite easily.. the speeds are great too.. zero throttling..

    • Bestvpn.co

Hey Martha, great to see your comment on our guide. IPVanish is a pretty good service and behaviour of that kind by this VPN is rare. Do try it again or contact its customer support for the best technical assistance in such matters. But Torguard is an equally stellar service and if you are with it at the moment, do try out its dedicated IPs for providing better security while streaming and performing other online activities.
