ALL HAIL NETLFIX for revolutionizing the way we watch our favorite movies/TV shows. Is it not sad though, when you realize the VoD tries its best to limit the content available in varied regions?!

Sure enough, they have their reasons; obtaining licenses from production houses for viewership outside US is not easy. It is still quite infuriating that they have not come up with a solution.

This leaves people like us with no option, but to look for workarounds, to circumvent these restrictions. My Aussie friends, if you are among the same, I have you covered.

Read this in-depth guide to figure out how to get an American Netflix using VPN in Australia and thank me later 😉

But first…

Why is American Netflix So Popular among Aussies?

When Netflix launched its VoD service in 2007, it was only accessible to American users. It remained this way for several years, until they started expanding in international markets, starting with Canada.

However, they did not launch in Australia until 2015, and this developed quite a craze about it in the country. You know how it is, the more you are denied something, the curious you get regarding it.

This urged users to rely on unblocking technologies like VPNs for accessing the platform, which they were able to for a long time until Netflix started banning VPNs too.

Now, Netflix is available in 190 countries worldwide including Australia, but the content available still varies by region and country, hence why its popularity only continues increasing (reaching 149 million paid subscribers among which 88.6 million are international).

Netflix Reaches 149 Paid Subscribers

In the first quarter of 2019 alone, Netflix has managed to generate over $4,520.99 Million in revenue, according to a report from Statista. That is a huge increase from last year!

Much of it is owed to availability of Netflix in more countries. Look at the market penetration in Australia alone, which touched a massive 42.7% in July 2018.

This gives a clear picture that Aussies, just like citizens in Canada, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Netherlands, and Germany – love the platform and content available.

And who can blame them? I’m a binge-watcher of Netflix too! I just started “Mad Men” a week ago, and I am already on season 5. It’s addictive!

How Many Shows/Movies are Available in Netflix USA and Netflix Australia

If we time-travel back in 2016-17, where you had 4339 movies and 1326 TV shows available in the US, users could only access 1599 movies and 445 TV shows in Australia.

You can look at the exact stats for 3-4 years ago from Finder and its global Netflix library totals guide. For 2019, there are 4091 movies and 1,761 TV shows in the US Netflix library (updated 11 July).

Conversely, you have access to 3693 movies and 1656 TV Shows in the AU Netflix library. The difference is far lesser as compared to a few years ago, but still is unfair in my opinion.

You know why? Australian users pay more for Netflix. I will discuss about this topic further in my article and also show you proof via screenshots!

How to Watch Netflix USA from Australia

I know unblocking VoDs is not something new for Aussies, but for the less knowledgeable, I do have to give a little background. So, my lovely amateur cord-cutters, the trick to watching Netflix US is to pretend you are based in the country – not physically, but virtually.

For this, you need to use Netflix with a VPN (one that has no trouble in unblocking the VoD, despite the VoD adopting banning methods like DPI, IP/DNS Filtering, etc). Once you find a suitable option, simply connect to a US server and visit Netflix, you should have access the US library!

If you are looking for recommendations on providers, here are the top 4 VPNs for unblocking US Netflix in Australia in my humble opinion, backed by putting in 48 hours of testing.

Netflix is Cheaper in USA than Australia – Here is How to Save a Few Bucks!

When I was testing these above providers for unblocking US Netflix, I came to know that the pricing for Australian users is higher, as compared to American users.

If you see the screenshot below, you can notice on the Australian sign up page, the basic plan starts at $9.99, standard at $13.99, and premium $17.99.

To leverage cheaper pricing, you can simply connect to a server in the US. Just make sure you have a valid bank or PayPal account from the country, before you dive into the signing process!

Not to mention, you will have to stop relying on dynamic/shared IPs and invest in a dedicated/static IP, so that you can unblock Netflix and pay at a lower rate at the same time.

Popular Titles Available on Netflix USA but not on Australian Netflix

I have already informed readers about the number of titles available in US and AU versions of Netflix, but what movies/TV shows are Australian users really missing out on?

Well, I did a little digging and I came across this Reddit thread, where I found links to a website called Flixwatch. You can find US exclusive content for movies, TV shows, and documentaries.

  1. Charmed (2019)
  2. Everybody Knows (2019)
  3. Seuss’ The Grinch (2018)
  4. The One I Love (2014)
  5. Prosecuting Evil: The Extraordinary World of Ben Ferencz

TV Shows

  1. 3% (2019)
  2. Designated Survivors
  3. Tales of the City
  4. Black Mirror
  5. House M.D.

How to Get American Netflix in Australia without VPN

I will be honest fellow cord-cutters and binge-watchers of Netflix, you cannot gain access to the US version of the VoD with a proxy/DNS, as they offer no encryption/security to hide your traffic.

VPNs, on the other hand, use military-grade AES-256-CBC encryption, along with features like obfuscation, which make it possible for users to unblock US Netflix.

Do not fall for websites/services that claim you can circumvent geo-restrictions particularly on Netflix using proxies or DNS, as they are phony and misguide users!

Wrapping Things Up

I hope my guide helps users understand how to get American Netflix in Australia. After all, no one should be denied access to the complete library, despite paying higher for the same service.

This kind of biasness is really disheartening for cord-cutters and binge-watchers and there is no wrong in finding a workaround to enjoy your favorite movies/TV shows.

Of course, if you encounter any issues/problems, do not hesitate on dropping a comment below. Also, help a brother out by sharing this guide with other Aussies, who want to access Netflix US!
