Want to gain access to the complete Netflix library in Malaysia? Read this guide for more information on how to make it possible!

Netflix is a global media streaming juggernaut that is slowly surpassing all types of video viewing avenues in terms of popularity at the moment.

Featuring some of the world’s best TV shows and movies, exclusively available only on its platform, Netflix has captured the attention of millions across the globe.

Sadly, Netflix does not offer similar media libraries for every region like those in Malaysia, because it has to protect its copyright obligations from production houses.

This is why many opt to use the best VPNs to circumvent the geo-restrictions and bypass the ban on the site and access Netflix US to access a much bigger and better library.

5 Things You Should Know About Netflix In Malaysia

If you are a regular member of the exclusive “Netflix and Chill” club yet, then you might not be much familiar with the platform’s features and how it actually works.

But more than that, you would like to know as to what makes one so eager to spend so much time binge-watching shows on Netflix?

One word, as to why that happens, Netflix is the BEST! If you are comparing your regular TV cable provider and the content it airs on Netflix and its content library, you are doing a grave injustice.

To know more on how this platform actually works, we’ve answered some of the most popular questions users mostly ask to make your decision to sign up with Netflix a whole lot easier:

1- The First Month Is Absolutely Free

On Netflix, the first month of use is absolutely free after you sign up. All the sign up requires is for you to submit your email address, fill in some other personal details like Date of Birth etc, set up a password and lastly, submit your debit/credit data and the subscription gets activated.

You will only be charged the amount when the month ends but you have the option to opt out of the service by going to the member’s area and opting for discontinuing your subscription to the service.

2- More Shows To Watch In 2020

Netflix always has some brilliant content lined up for each year to keep the interest of old and new users piqued at all times. Some great shows that you would love to watch are Insatiable, Black Mirror (New Seasons) and others.

Netflix works on producing regional content as well, like its recently successful Netflix Original Show “Sacred Games” that was released in India and became a highly popular show in that country and surrounding regions.

Look forward to some amazing shows for the rest of the year!

3- Have Internet, Will Watch Netflix

To watch Netflix, you just an internet connection and that’s all. And not even a high-speed connection as Netflix can work even on speeds as low as 1MBPS. For HD and Ultra HD, you might be requiring a faster connection, but as long as you have an internet connection, you can enjoy Netflix for as long as you want!

4- It’s Not Just All In English

Netflix is a global service so it is working incredibly powerfully to make its content available in popular world languages. It already has content available in Chinese, Spanish and even Arabic translations and subtitles with more support for other languages to come out soon!

5- A Membership Starts at Only RM33 a Month

Netflix is highly affordable as its based on a subscription model in which you just pay a flat out fee for unlimited viewing of the content contained in its wholesome library. The plans start at just RM33 for the Basic Plan, with other plans available at higher prices depending on user needs.

How to Watch Netflix in Malaysia for Free

Netflix is not free in Malaysia and neither it is so anywhere else in the world. That’s because Netflix invests billions of dollars into making thousands of shows and movies that we enjoy.

No other conventional media viewing platform like cable television can boast of shows like Black Mirror, Orange is the New Black, Narcos, 13 Reasons Why, Stranger Things, Sacred Games, The Crown among others.

And that’s just talking about the shows that are there. Netflix has loads of movies as well, all the popular ones, Yes! They’ve even got animated series of all genres.

If you want to unblock Netflix with a free solution, refer to our guide: free vpns for netflix. Although they may not work always, it’s worth the try nevertheless.

Netflix Malaysia Price/Package

Netflix generally has three plans irrespective of whichever country you are buying its subscription in i.e. basic, standard and premium. The prices are different for each plan:

  1. In the Basic plan, you won’t have HD or Ultra HD video quality and there will only be one screen available. This plan costs RM33.
  2. In the Standard Plan, you have HD available with 2 simultaneous screens. The price of this plan is RM42.
  3. In the Premium Plan, you have both, HD and Ultra HD available along with 4 simultaneous screens. The price of this plan is RM51.

Netflix Malaysia Content

Obviously, Netflix Malaysia won’t has the best content library because most of the best TV Shows and movies are only covered by copyright in the United States, thereby the best library for Netflix is the US one.

Netflix Malaysian library limits you pretty heavily in what you can access. There will be shows like Black Mirror, Insatiable, Stranger Things etc. but the library you get access to in Malaysia is not even half as good as the US library.

Netflix Malaysia Content

We’ve covered the US library in detail in our guide on American Netflix, so if you want to know more about what we are trying to portray here, then here is a glimpse of the Netflix American Library.

Most of the shows you see here won’t be available in the Netflix Malaysian library. Luckily, you can access this library by relying on the VPNs listed above.

How to Watch Netflix on PS4 in Malaysia

PlayStation 4 is not just a gaming console anymore, it is a complete media station powered by a browser and in-store apps. Powered by Full HD up-scaling and the Sony PlayStation Store, you can now download and watch Netflix on your PS4 in Malaysia.

The only thing that you have to consider is how to unblock Netflix US &Netflix UK. The best idea is to use a VPN to bypass the geo-restrictions and watch the best entertainment directly on your PS 4 console. To watch Netflix US on PS4 here is what you need:

  1. PS4 console
  2. Netflix subscription
  3. Netflix PS4 app
  4. Cheap VPN service

You will need to configure the VPN service on your router because there are no apps available to configure VPN on the PlayStation 4. To do this check out our guide here or simply contact your VPN provider’s support. Once your VPN is configured on the router, here is what to do:

  1. Connect your VPN to a USA server
  2. Launch Netflix on your PS 4 and log in
  3. You will notice you are logging into the US Netflix
  4. Enjoy full US Netflix

How to Sign Up Netflix in Malaysia

You can sign up to Netflix in Malaysia by simply downloading the app on your PS4 console, or, signup on your PC/mobile device. Visit; fill in the necessary details and payment information (without VPN if you want) and complete the registration.

You can also use a cheap VPN, connect to a US server and register through the US Netflix Portal like I have above.

Is Netflix better than Astro?

In short, yes! There are many features offered by Netflix that outweigh Astro by a long mile. Astro might have 65% penetration into Malaysian TV households, but it cannot match the collection of media offered by Netflix.

Netflix has around 14,000 titles in total across all of its regions. Although Netlfix adds and removes content in various regions, the US Netflix contains the largest library.

It is estimated to have around 7,500 titles. With Astro, you don’t get these many movies or TV shows to watch and also you cannot control what you watch.

Another compelling reason for forgetting Astro is the price difference. A Netflix account cost $7.99 a month, which makes it around RM 36 per month.

Combine that with a VPN and you are spending approximately RM 50 a month to watch thousands of shows and movies of your choice.

Which Devices Can I Use to Watch Netflix in Malaysia?

Netflix has exclusive apps for iOS and Android devices, smart TVs and set-top boxes. So apart from your computer, you watch Netflix on various other devices as well.

You can download the app from the US Google Play Store or Apple Store for watching movies and shows on handheld devices. The latest smart TVs come with a built-in app of Netflix.

Various set top boxes like Apple TV, Roku, Chromecast, etc. offer the Netflix app as well. The above-listed VPN services are also compatible on these devices.

Many of these VPN providers also allow simultaneous connections; meaning you can configure VPN on your PC, mobile device, router, and other devices at the same time.

Wrapping Things Up

Netflix is growing at a staggering rate and is opening shop in various countries. Unfortunately, it has yet to launch its complete library in Malaysia.

With all factors taken into consideration, ExpressVPN is the ultimate choice for unblocking Netflix. However, if you looking for another budget-friendly alternative, consider Surfshark too.

Hi,, if i subscribe to netflix malaysia and then i travel to the usa , can i still use the same malaysia account i have ? And which category will i be accessing ( no vpn)

    • says:

Hey there Sean, hope you’re doing well. Yes, if you sign up for a Netflix account in Malaysia, you can still use it outside the country. The only difference would be in the content visible. Like if you go to US. Instead of seeing Netflix’s Malaysian library, you’ll get to see the complete US library.

  2. Ken says:

Hi Obaid, came across your excellent blog while doing some research on Netflix. A few quick questions if you don’t mind.
    1. I’m going to go PureVPN due to the cost and it is recommended as one of your top 3 choices. If I click on the link above, I hope you will get your reference? That’s the least I can do.
    2. Subscribe Netflix directly on the USA site. Will they accept my Malaysian credit card?
    3. If the USA VPN servers are congested and i need to switch to another country, example Singapore. I guess i won’t be able to access the full USA titles but Netflix will show titles enabled for Singapore instead? Or I won’t be able to watch anything until my VPN is back to the USA server?
    Thanks for your help!

    • says:

Hello Ken, Thanks for your appreciation.
1: Yes, I will get my reference through the link. Thanks
2: Netflix accepts all international Visa, MasterCard, and American Express cards. If you have any of these, you can easily subscribe to any of your desired plans.
3: Netflix has a smart VPN blocker that cross-checks the DNS and IP address. If you are not connected to the US server, then you will not be able to access the US library at all. However, there is nothing to worry about, as the servers of PureVPN are always available. So, you will not face any issues.

Does Netflix available for live sports channel as astro support?

    • says:

      Hey ButuMalai,
Glad to see you commenting here, and the reply to your query is that no live channels are supported by Netflix. Actually, Netflix is a streaming platform that hosts content libraries, which means that you can go and watch content thats already there, but no, it doesnt offer live streaming.
For that you can see some other great alternatives like DirecTVNow, Hulu, SlingTV etc. But these channels are geo-restricted and are not available outside their own countries unless you use a VPN to unblock them.
We have a lot of guides for them on our website, so use the search bar and you will find tons of good recommendation with complete guides on what they offer, their prices, how to unblock them easily etc.

  4. Jensen K says:

Hi, how about that I already log in using by my mobile phone number? Is there any possibility to use VPN again?

  5. Shawn says:

How can I watch the live TV show like astro?

    • says:

Hey Shawn, great to see you commenting here and as far your query is concerned, if you are talking about unblocking Astro Malaysia from outside of Malaysia, you can easily do that with any of the providers mentioned above by just connecting to a valid and working Malaysian server.
Apart from that, if the server in Malaysia is not serving your purpose then you can always contact the super helpful live chat support option at providers like Pure and Express to provide you with a better option!
Would love to hear from you again!

  7. Bill says:

Great information, thank you. Do all VPN providers offer dedicated IP addresses? How do you go about checking on availability? I am currently using IPVanish and it will not work with Netflix USs. I can explore the dedicated option first and if not available/possible, switch

vpn providers. I really need the greater subtitle selection with US Netflix. Thanks

  8. /z! says:

Hi Asfarina. As far as the recent reports go, some users say that is working while others are reporting issues. If you do not have any DNS leaks then I guess it should work without any trouble. On the contrary, you can try out the top two VPNs listed above as they both work perfectly fine for changing Netflix regions. However, if you are looking for a new SmartDNS service, you can also check out our guide:

  9. Victor Ling says:

Hi aazim, i m curently streaming netflix malaysia from apple
Tv 3. May i know how to i stream netflix US from apple tv ? How to change the settings? And how to set up vpn?

    • /z! says:

Hi Victor, thanks for your comment. Yes you can access US Netflix on your Apple TV by using a VPN. There are different ways through which you can configure a VPN on your Apple TV.
First, you can setup a VPN on your router and then connect your Apple TV. Second, you can share your VPN connection from your PC or laptop with your Apple TV. Third, you can use a VPN via AirPlay.
It might seem complicated but here is a complete guide that will help you setup a VPN on Apple TV in no time:

  10. Darren says:

    Hi Aazim,

I have subscribed to Netflix Msia and dowloaded the app to my note 5 to watch. But the shows i like are not in Msia library, is there any way i access to the US shows if i purchase a vpn.

Please recommend the best vpn provider to subscribe and how should i do the setting on my phone?

    Thank you.

    • /z! says:

Hi Darren, thanks for your comment. Yes with the help of a VPN you can access US Netflix library. You can choose from anyone one of the top two providers listed in the table above. Both are working fine for accessing content on US Netflix.

Once you have subscribed to a VPN service, I would suggest that you can download their app from Google Play Store. This way you don’t have to do any (manual) additional settings on your Note 5. Once you are connected to the US server, access Netflix app from your Note 5 and you should be able to view the US library.

      • Darren says:

Hi Aazim, really appreciate your reply. So should i subscribe to PureVpn first then go subscribe to Netflix Msia package or should i subscribe to Netflix US?

Because last time i tried a Vpn for a month, and i was on Netflix Msia package, i keep having the error that i’m behind a proxy and i can’t watch.

        Please advise, thanks.

        • /z! says:

Hi Darren, usually we recommend that you get a VPN account first and then subscribe to Netflix USA. Do note that you might have create a new account for this approach to work and don’t use your old Netflix (Malaysia) account.

If you do decide to use your old Netflix (Malaysia) account, I believe they might already have your details such as country of origin. There is a slight chance that you might face the same error that you were facing before.

If this does happens, I would suggest that you contact PureVPN live chat support, they will be able to assist you more appropriately. The last we contacted them about this issue, they have found some kind of work around this problem and perhaps it might help you out in accessing Netflix USA. Do let us know if you require further assistance.

        • Dr. Swag says:

Instead of a Vpn, you should try smartdns. It doesn’t effect your network speed because instead of rerouting your traffic, it tricks the websites into thinking you’re from another country. I recommend unotelly

  11. Kam Yee Lai says:

Hi Aazim, I’m totally blurred about setting up VPN. Currently I’m using Sharp smartTV, running on Unifi to access some internet channels, how can I enrol to Netflix?
    1. What will be the first step? Enrol to VPN then proceed to Netflix (via their US main website)?
    2. Upon signing up with VPN, how to proceed? Do I need to hook up a laptop to configure my unifi IP address?
    3. Upon signing up with Netflix, where do I download the Netflix app? Just from my smarttv Google browser?

Thanks and look forward to your favorable reply. I am not a tech guy, so sorry for asking the steps.

    • @z! says:

Hi Kam! Thanks for your query, I’ll try my best to help you out. You can either get a VPN first and then Netflix or the other way around, both would work. However, if you want to access US Netflix library, I would suggest to get a VPN first and then subscribe to Netflix (via US webpage).

Once you have signed up for the services, now comes the tricky bit. For you to watch Netflix on your Sharp smart TV, you would either have to setup a VPN on your wireless router (if you have one) or share your internet connection with your smart TV. This is because smart TV’s don’t allow you to setup a VPN directly onto them. To help you setup a VPN for your Smart TV, here is a guide that explains both the processes:

For your Netflix app, yes you can look it up on Google browser or if there is an online app store for your Sharp smart TV, you can get it from there as well.

      • Kam Yee Lai says:

Thanks so much Aazim. I’ll try it this week when I’m free. My concern is only the router part. Looks like have to hook up laptop to router which I’m completely noob and no idea about it. My TV is running on wifi at the moment same goes with all my mobile devices. Guess best would be do the setting at the router.

Certainly will test it out pretty soon. Can’t stand ASTRO anymore ? Only naik and never turun the price. Will update or should there be any problem. Thanks again!

      • Kam Yee Lai says:

Hi Aazim, managed to settle the VPN and accessed and registered NetFlix USA, but having problem to search for the Netflix App to launch in my TV. I browsed on Google, but no Netflix App applicable. Android TV can’t access to Play Store via browser. So now I’m stuck at the final stage :p Hope you can enlighten.

        Sharp Aquos Android TV: LC-55LE860M

        • /z! says:

Hi Kam, I am glad that you managed through all the tricky stages. As for not finding Netflix app on Sharp Aquos Android TV, I did some digging and found other Sharp Android TV users also complaining the same issue. Here are some basic steps you can follow (if you haven’t tried them already):

          • Try opening Netflix from your browser instead from an app.
          • Check the ‘Pre-Installed App’ section on your Sharp Android TV. Some Sharp Android TV users reported that the Netflix app was found under this section.
          • Connect to a VPN (USA Server) and then access Google Play Store to find the Netflix app.

If these don’t work, then try changing the Google DNS settings to US based DNS. This might sound tricky but you can get the information and all the steps (tutorials) from the respective VPN provider.

And, if this doesn’t solves the problem then you might have update your smart TV’s firmware, although I would advise you to contact Sharp technical support first.

          • Kam Yee Lai says:

Hi Aazim, it’s all done! Read a lot too and I called NetFlix USA too ? Anyway it’s all settled. Netflix-ing USA at home. Thanks again!

          • /z! says:

WOW thats brilliant Kam! Glad that it all worked out. Happy Netflix-ing 🙂

  12. razfan mn says:

been using netflix in Malaysia via one of the VPN provider for almost a year but currently it no longer work. Looking for alternative now. Can you confirm your service is workable in Malaysia?. I’m using Roku 3 and my PC to watch it.

    • @z! says:

Thanks for your reply. Could you please let us know which VPN provider were you using previously? As to our knowledge, ExpressVPN and PIA users are not experiencing any problem yet in accessing US Netflix.

Alternatively, one solution to this Netflix VPN blockage is to get a dedicated (static) IP of US from a VPN provider. This minimizes any chances of Netflix blocking your IP address & restricting you from access US Netflix.

  13. Bill T says:

Since Netflix it is now available in Malaysia starting from RM33, can I understand how a VPN is needed. And any comment of how to watch Netflix with a normal tv instead of a smart tv?

    • @z! says:

Thanks for your comment Bill. Yes Netflix is now available in Malaysia but the content library is very limited, i.e. if you compare it to other regions like USA or UK. You won’t get all the shows and movies on Netflix in Malaysia. This is where a VPN helps you out! By switching your location using a VPN, you can access Netflix library of other regions and expand your streaming options.

      • Bill T says:

Great! Thanks Z for the reply! How bout the smart tv? I don’t have one so I am thinking which will be the best option for me, a set box? Blu ray player?

        • @z! says:

Your welcome Bill! The best option really depends on what you have in mind in terms of streaming for the long run. A smart TV will get rid of all the additional devices you might need, but for now, a streaming player like Google Chromecast or Roku makes more sense.

The latest blue ray players now also allow you to stream Netflix shows and movies but you’ll have to check which blue ray players are supported by Netflix. Alternatively, you can also use your gaming consoles like PS3, PS4, Xbox360 or XboxOne to stream on Netflix. You can check out the full list of devices supported by Netflix on their ‘’ page.

          • Bill T says:

It really depends on your budget, I believe. According to Netflix, LG, Panasonic, Hisense, and Phillips as the top brands for Smart TV to use. For LG, it recommends series 6000 and higher. You can check out their ‘Devices’ page to get the full details.

Hi can you please explain the legal implication of using a VPN in Malaysia? Wont your account be blocked? and how safe are your card details with these VPN providers?

    • @z! says:

There are no laws that prevent you from using a VPN in Malaysia as yet, so you are safe from any kind of legal implications. As far as using a VPN to access Netflix goes, Netflix won’t ban your account.

According to The Guardian, Netflix will restrict you to access only Malaysian Netflix library and not access Netflix of other regions. However, Netflix has not defined the process through which it will crackdown proxy or VPN users.

One method to safeguard your Netflix account is by using a dedicated IP; this way you will have a specific IP address of any region of your choice and it will make it very difficult for Netflix to track down if you are using a VPN.

Although it is safe to share your card details with a VPN providers; alternatively you can use BitCoin or other payment methods if you are not feeling comfortable in providing card details.
