BBC iPlayer VPN: Only 5 VPN Apps Working in 2018 [Tested & Reviewed]

Obaid Chawla November 16, 2018

Here a is comprehensive guide on BBC iPlayer VPN including Top VPNs that work with the service, why is there not an international version of the iPlayer available yet, why is it geo-restricted, why free VPNs are not a good choice for unblocking BBC iPlayer, UI & UX overview of the website and mobile app, list of channels offered and supported devices and much more by BestVPN.co!

BBC iPlayer is a top UK streaming service that culls content from a wide variety of channels owned by the British Broadcasting Service and some other affiliate providers. This service allows you to view the best content from one of the largest media libraries provided by a streaming provider in the world at the moment.

However, this service won’t be accessible to user living outside the UK unless they deploy a Best VPN to bypass the geo-restrictions and the VPN ban on the site.

News: If you are currently living in China and are looking to use a VPN to watch the BBC iPlayer, you might have another reason that will make you back your decision. Just recently, BBC websites got banned in China and now BBC is recommending that users deploy Bbc iplayer vpn to bypass this restriction to gain access to any kind of content from BBC’s service in China.

Why You Need VPN on BBC iPlayer?

BBC is famous the world over for its news arm primarily but it has a mammoth service that spans entertainment, sports and much more. The iPlayer was BBC’s attempt to make its programming more accessible to viewers by allowing them to stream it online.

But, BBC iPlayer is a geo-restricted service, which means that you can’t watch it in other countries except for the UK. That’s why you need a VPN to circumvent these restrictions and access this streaming service from anywhere in the world

bbc iplayer vpn

However, before we get to VPNs and unblocking, let me give you some retrospective on the service and allow you to understand this service in some more detail.

Do You Need a UK TV license for Accessing BBC iPlayer

Yes, you do, but that license will only be available to you if you live inside the UK. The iPlayer sources its finances from TV licensing fees generated in the UK and by selling the distribution rights of its programs to third-party buyers/channels and that’s the reason why the iPlayer has placed a VPN ban on its site to prevent users who don’t have the license to access to service.

Why You Need VPN on BBC iPlayer?

UK citizens know that in order to access any BBC related service, they would need a TV license to make their actions legal.

Tools to Watch BBC iPlayer in the USA

Just as it was mentioned earlier in this guide, there is no way to access BBC iPlayer from outside the UK through any other means than by using the Best VPN.

Americans might be enjoying BBC America through their cable subscriptions but by getting BBC iPlayer USA, they can secure access to a lot more British content than they are currently being provided with.

Proxies don’t work on the iPlayer as this is one of the smartest streaming sites in the market at the moment and it can detect such proxy routed connections with relative ease which leaves you with a VPN as your only choice.

But before getting any VPN, just remember that BBC iPlayer has a VPN ban in place similar to the Netflix VPN ban that can detect such VPN routed connections and deny you access to the service. Only the Top VPNs can bypass the geo-restrictions on the BBC iPlayer USA as well as the VPN ban on the site.

If you want to know more about such VPNs then read along.

Budget Friendly VPN for BBC iPlayer:

While unblocking BBC iPlayer is quite a tricky task mainly because of a VPN ban on the service, it certainly doesn’t mean that users need to pay a high amount in terms of subscription if they want access to a VPN that circumvent the geo-restrictions on the service successfully.

There are still many affordable VPN providers out there who are offering Best Cheap VPN deals for BBC iPlayer. For more on such budget friendly services, you can check out our comprehensive guide on Best Cheap VPN.

Free/Paid VPNs that don’t work with BBC iPlayer

Free VPN BBC iPlayer might appear enticing for users as they offer all the things that a paid VPN does, but don’t get duped by their attractive marketing tactics as they are mostly a façade, behind which, there is nothing of substance, especially when it comes to providing unblocking services for geo-restricted websites like the BBC iPlayer.

According to our comprehensive tests for VPNs that work with BBC iPlayer, not a single Free VPN BBC iPlayer succeeded in unblocking the service. This is because they cannot afford to change servers with the rate required to evade the VPN ban/detection mechanism on the site.

Following is the list of some popular (Paid & Free both) VPNs that are not currently working with BBC iPlayer:

❌ IPVanish

❌ Tunnelbear

❌ Windscribe

❌ VyprVPN

❌ Zenmate

❌ ProtonVPN

Why Isn’t There an International Version of BBC iPlayer yet?

Many users out there question the geo-restrictions on streaming providers and ask as to why these players cannot be made much more accessible to a global audience. Well, in the case of the BBC iPlayer, it did launch an international version back in 2011 for eleven European countries. The service was available through an iPad app and published limited content as compared to the full-fledged service available in the UK.

BBC had planned to take the service globally and for serving that very goal, it thought of launching the iPlayer in the US, but then it hit a roadblock as cable providers there threatened to drop BBC America from their subscriptions if BBC planned to go ahead with its launch of the iPlayer, making BBC rescind its decision and it closed down the international version of its iPlayer back in 2017.

BBC iPlayer is still inaccessible from anywhere in the world thereby leaving users only with the decision to use a BBC iPlayer VPN service in order to get past the restrictions on the site and access the amazing content on offer.

BBC iPlayer VPN Reddit

Some years back, Reddit used to be a credible source to cull reviews about all kinds of services from original users but in the past year or so, the site has been infiltrated by swarms of spammers from different service providers who are there to put links on the threads for their services in order to gain more traffic to their sites.

This has made the site incredibly unreliable as most of the reviews you will find there are done by spammers. It takes an expert eye to detect original reviews from the spam ones and that’s exactly what we have done here.

On Reddit, BBC iPlayer VPN has secured a lot of recommendations on what service unblocks the service reliably. On top of these recommendations are those VPN providers which we have already covered in detail above and recommended to you for unblocking iPlayer reliably from anywhere.

ExpressVPN and NordVPN got some great reviews from Redditors on their inherent ability to deliver a fast, reliable unblocking service for BBC iPlayer.

BBC iPlayer Blocking/Detecting VPN

Why BBC iPlayer blocking VPN? The BBC iPlayer is a geo-restricted service only available in the UK because the content available on the site is not covered by copyright anywhere in the world outside that territory. Generally, users try to fix this problem by using VPNs to connect to UK servers, so what BBC iPlayer did to stop such users from using its service is to introduce a VPN ban on its site.

The ban is also in place due to non-UK users not possessing a valid UK TV license that makes it legal to access the service.

VPN bans have become standard industry practice across the streaming domain and similar bans can be found on sites like Netflix and Hulu.

BBC iPlayer Blocking/Detecting VPN not working

This VPN ban allows iPlayer to detect any connection being routed through a VPN and then block it from accessing its service. Generally, weak VPNs are the most vulnerable to can’t make it through this VPN ban and become useless options for unblocking the site.

Bypassing the VPN ban can only be done through the Best VPNs like the ones mentioned in our list below because they have the capacity and resources to continuously change old servers with new ones. The VPN ban mostly works by detecting too many connections emanating from a single server and when such a thing happens, these Top VPNs switch to a new server altogether with new IPs in order to provide their users with the supreme ability to unblock BBC iPlayer from anywhere, anytime.

How to Fix BBC iPlayer Detecting VPN

Generally, the part for BBC iPlayer detecting VPN is activated when too many users swarm to its site from a single VPN server/very similar IP addresses. When the iPlayer has got enough data to suggest that there is a high probability that a VPN is in action, it moves to ban it from accessing its site and app altogether, thereby making users lose their ability to unblock the site.

Here are some great ways through which you can fix BBC iPlayer detecting VPN problem:

Fix Your DNS Cache

Ever heard of cookies?

No we are not talking here about the ones that you dip in warm milk rather, we are talking about, simply speaking, the log files that your keeps of many forms of data that it comes across.

If, in the cookie cache, a location cookie has been stored, it will not allow you to unblock BBC iPlayer.

To get around this problem, simply clear your Cookies cache every time you want to unblock BBC iPlayer.

This can be done quite easily by going in to your browser settings.

Another similar blockade can be put in place by your DNS cache if its not cleared before running the iPlayer.

Flush your DNS cache on Windows by just clicking on your Start command and writing “CMD”. (In most newer versions of Windows, you can start typing as soon as the Windows prompt opens and the system will automatically activate the search bar. If you are using an older version of Windows, go to the search bar manually and type RUN if typing CMD is not bringing up anything.)

Once the Command Prompt (CMD) is open, you just need to run the following command “ipconfig /flushdns” by typing it in and pressing enter.

Switching Servers/Asking their Support

The best way to get around the iPlayer VPN detection problem is to switch your server from the one that is not working to a new one down the list. Many top VPNs offer multiple UK servers allowing you to do this quite easily. NordVPN has 477 UK servers, so if one is not working, select another from the list and you will be on your way.

You can also ask your VPN’s live chat support team for their best UK servers to unblock BBC iPlayer like we asked PureVPN’s support for their best UK server for iPlayer here:

How to Fix BBC iPlayer Detecting VPN

Dedicated IPs

As we have mentioned here before, iPlayer detects VPNs when there are too many connections being routed through a single server or a group of similar IP addresses. Acquiring a dedicated IP VPN will surely help you to never face this problem as the iPlayer won’t be singling you out for a suspicious connection ever.

Install the VPN for BBC iPlayer on your Router

Nowadays, people use multiple devices for streaming including their smartphones and other niche devices like Firestick, Roku etc. But these devices can be a bit erratic as compared to desktop devices in performing the function of unblocking a service satisfactorily.

When your BBC iPlayer doesn’t get unblocked from outside the UK on such devices, mainly the problems lies in the app you are using for streaming the iPlayer.

These apps can interfere with the device’s attempts to connect with the VPN provider’s DNS servers, instead, almost forcing the device into using the DNS servers of the internet providers.

This creates a conflict in the device, thereby making it unable to unblock iPlayer for you.

The best way to get around this problem is to install your VPN on your Router in order to ensure that your device doesn’t have to perform the task of circumvention itself rather the internet connection being relayed to it is already coming in an altered mode.

Most VPN providers support installation on DD-WRT routers but you can ask their support for guiding you through the process of installing the VPN on your specific kind of router as well.

BBC iPlayer VPN Not Working

Mostly, all the guides you will find that are addressing the issue of BBC iPlayer not working will be covering internet connection issues and will ask you to either check your internet connection through speed tests, connect directly to the Ethernet, check your 3G/4G speed etc.

However, if it still doesn’t work, you might need to reinstall the app or even update your device or BBC iPlayer’s app to the latest version.

Here are the links for updated apps for BBC iPlayer:

  1. Android App
  2. iOS App
  3. Amazon Fire app

Here’s how you can check for any pending updates on your device that might be causing the problems in connecting to BBC iPlayer:

  • iOS Devices –Select “Settings” > Select “General” > Select “Software Update
  • Android and Amazon Fire devices/OS – Select “Settings” > Select “About Device” > Select “Software Update”.

How to watch BBC iPlayer on Android using VPN

The BBC iPlayer is available as an Android app, which we already described in detail above. Using the service on Android is not much different from using it through its website.

And if you want to unblock BBC iPlayer on your Android, most Top VPNs offer dedicated Android clients in order to allow you to access this streaming site from your Android smartphone/device. Here’s how you can watch BBC iPlayer on Android using a VPN:

  • Subscribe to a Top VPN service and pay for its pricing plans
  • Obtain user credentials for your VPN account via the confirmation email
  • Download the Android app of your VPN from Google Play Store
  • Let it install on your device and then login into it
  • Once the VPN is installed, connect to a UK server on it
  • Visit BBC.co.uk/iPlayer and sign up with the service
  • Enjoy live TV and your favorite shows on BBC iPlayer

How to Watch BBC iPlayer on iPhone/iOS using VPN

Your BBC iPlayer also comes with an iOS app but one big problem here it is that most VPNs, even the Top ones listed above can’t guarantee that the VPN will unblock the service on the iPhone/iPad. The reason behind this being that iOS devices often force their system to use the original DNS rather than allowing the device to use the DNS of the VPN.

The best way to access BBC iPlayer on iOS devices is to download Chrome and then use VPN Chrome extensions to unblock the service. I know that this process is a bit long but the easier way doesn’t work that well.

There are many review sites out there that will mislead you into believing that VPNs can unblock iPlayer on iOS through their native iOS clients but as we have conducted extensive tests on this, we know that this method fails in 8 out of 11 attempts, while using a Chrome extension VPN will allow you to breeze through the geo-restrictions on BBC iPlayer in no time at all.

BBC iPlayer VPN Chromecast:

Chromecast is Google’s answer to popular streaming devices like Roku and Firestick. It’s a device through which you can stream video content on large screen devices like your TV via your computer or mobile device.

So if you want to stream BBC iPlayer through your Chromecast, the best way to do it is through your computer. You can also do it with your mobile and the steps to both are pretty similar and straightforward. Here’s you can do that through both of these devices:

Through Your Laptop:

  • Your laptop needs to be connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your Chromecast
  • Now proceed towards opening the Chrome browser on your laptop. Do make sure that you install the Chromecast extension before you go ahead with this
  • Now open bbc.co.uk/iplayer and select the program you want to stream. Do note that you cant stream live channels through this option and you only need to stick through with the recorded programs
  • Now after you have played the program, you will need to click on an icon from the control bar known as “Cast”. It will look like a small screen of TV with signals emanating out of it
  • Your Chromecast will now stream the program to your device of choice i.e. your TV or LED etc.

Do note that if you are trying to use BBC iPlayer on Chromecast from outside the UK, you will need to deploy a Best VPN in order to unblock the service and continue watching it via your Chromecast.

For SmartPhones:

  • Your SmartPhone needs to be connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your Chromecast
  • Ensure that your iPlayer app is update to the latest version
  • Open the app, and once it detects your Chromecast device, it will display a notification notifying you about it within the app
  • If the icon is blue in color, this means that the iPlayer app is now successfully connected with your Chromecast device
  • Now, go to any program you want to stream through your Chromecast, click on this cast icon and the program will be beamed to your preferred device i.e. the device to which your Chromecast dongle is connected to

UX and UI Design of the Website and Mobile App of BBC iPlayer

One big plus of BBC iPlayer is its simplistic website and mobile app that makes it relatively easier to navigate the site and watch anything that you want.

Other services like the wildly popular Netflix can be a bit confusing at first in terms of changing from season to season on a particular show and it takes time before you really get the hang of it. There is no such thing with the iPlayer as all options are placed quite visibly and designed and placed to power as much user accessibility as possible.

Take a look at its website as it appears to a user while he/she is streaming a show:

How to watch BBC iPlayer on Android using VPN

As is visible from this screen grab, the font, in white, is easy to read against the dark bluish background. This is not too much heavy on the eye making it perfect for viewing in the comforts of your bedroom or lounge with dim lights.

The service gives you very British feels as it’s not as boisterous or “Cool” as its American counterparts or competing services like Netflix, Hulu or Amazon Prime. The interface is smooth and appears benign, making the user feel welcome.

How to Watch BBC iPlayer on iPhone/iOS using VPN

The Video quality is HD which not be apparent in the picture placed here as we have to optimize our images to meet Google’s SEO standards (Google tends to penalize high page loading times with lower rankings), but it is.

Sound quality is good but if you believe its low then you are probably not accustomed much to the way the British tend to speak. The low voice sound is more due to the people’s soft tones while speaking and has no connection to the iPlayer’s sound quality which is great.

The options are placed quite readable in menu placed on the top of the page, with further sub-options appearing when you click on these Primary options. From accessing channels to the media library, everything will be easily understood once you sign in to the service.how to watch bbc iplayer

Now coming to the mobile app, it’s not much different from the website and BBC doesn’t seem to have put much effort in changing it from how the website appears, which is a good thing, as it guarantees uniformity irrespective of which device you are using it on.

But one thing you need to do in order to make your mobile experience with the BBC iPlayer good enough is to install the BBC Media Player when you install the BBC iPlayer. This media player is specially built to support playback on the iPlayer and will allow you to exercise more control over the playing media that you could without getting it installed.

List of Channels Available on BBC iPlayer

BBC iPlayer is not just your average media library but a comprehensive service that also offers live TV, which according to my analysis, is its biggest USP.

If you are not in the mood to stream any program or title at the moment and want to be led by your old habit of flipping channels on your TV to see if there is anything interesting going on at the moment, BBC iPlayer is just the right thing for you.

Here is the list of channels that are being offered by BBC iPlayer at the moment:

  3. BBC Three
  4. BBC Four
  5. BBC Radio
  6. CCBC

  1. Wondermary

I’ve just bought a nord subscription for 2 years with code get2yrs(if it works more than once maybe someone else can make a use of it too), the deal seemed so good that I just went for it and completely forgot to check if the service works with iPlayer, thank God it does, thanks for assurance. I wouldn’t need it normally, but I’m going away to study in September and just though it’d be good to keep up with things.

Hey Wondermary, thanks for commenting and sharing your experience with the VPN service. Indeed, the service would be a good choice to keep up with your unblocking and streaming activities, if you visit a country with tough internet laws. Best of luck with your studies! 🙂
