Does NordVPN Allow Torrenting?
Recently, there has been a surge of users asking us about the capability of NordVPN Torrenting . This curiosity stems from recent allegations leveled against the provider, causing many to question its privacy/anonymity.
As such, I took it upon myself to conduct an unbiased and recent NordVPN review. I test out its safety and ability to keep you hidden, when engaging in activities like streaming movies or P2P/Torrenting.
Is NordVPN Good for Torrenting?
Yes, I definitely recommend NordVPN to any individual who downloads torrents. It boasts a safe jurisdiction, military-grade encryption, dedicated IPs, p2p-specific servers, offers a SOCKS5 proxy and is free of WebRTC/DNS/IP address leaks.
Based in a Safe Jurisdiction: Panama
NordVPN has its headquarters in Panama, giving it an an edge over other providers. It is outside the range of internet enemy jurisdictions like the Five, Nine, and Fourteen Eyes alliances.
This gives users an extra dose of anonymity, as Panama is free from mandatory data retention and mass surveillance laws. Even if they receive a gag order accompanied by a subpoena, they would not have to comply!
Military-Grade Encryption: AES-256-CBC
This VPN service for torrenting offers you the ability to connect to all popular protocols. On the OpenVPN protocol, it supports military-grade AES-256-CBC cipher with HMAC SHA256 hash authentication for the data channel. On top of that, you can also install & use NordVPN on Apple TV for safest yet anonymous torrenting and browsing.
Meanwhile for the control channel, NordVPN uses AES-256-CBC cipher with an RSA-2048 handshake and HMAC SHA256 data authentication. The DHE-4096 key exchange is utilized for Perfect Forward Secrecy (PFS).
Varied Security Features Available: Including Dedicated IPs
Features for boosting your security for P2P/Torrenting, include the secure DoubleVPN (connects to two different servers from around the world to boost overall privacy), Onion over VPN, DDoS Protection, Obfuscation, and Kill Switch.
Most importantly, you have a dedicated IP available, which you can use solely for torrenting. This IP will be available only to you. As such, you receive unmatched speeds and even the ability to bypass ISP throttling.
P2P-Specific Servers: Crossing the 4,900+ Mark
If your drop-down the “select server type” menu, you will notice that NordVPN offers over 5,604+ servers for p2p/torrenting only. This is quite remarkable, as you will never have to worry about server load issues.
Offers a SOCKS5 Proxy: Speed up Torrent Downloads
NordVPN offers users have the ability to add a SOCKS5 proxy to their Torrent Clients. For uTorrent applications, go to “Options” and then “Preferences”. Go to the connection menu and choose the type “SOCKS5 proxy” on the Proxy Server selection.
Enter a relevant server address. Here is a list of NordVPN servers that allow P2P/Torrenting. Enter “1080” for the Port Type, and then finalize the settings by entering your NordVPN username and password. Hit “OK” and enjoy!
A SOCKS5 proxy only allows AUTHORIZED users access to a server, speeding downloading. Also, no matter how hard your local ISP tries, there is no way they can find out you are download files via torrent!
Free from VPN Leaks: Solid WebRTC/DNS/IP Protection
To put NordVPN to the real test, I decided to perform a thorough WebRTC/DNS/IP address leak analysis, As expected, the VPN successfully passed the testing on three different tools:
WebRTC Leak Test
I first decided to use https://browserleaks.com/ for conducting a thorough WebRTC leak test. As you can see below, there were no errors found. My original IPv4 and IPv6 address are both invisible, displaying the IP address given by NordVPN i.e. 220.127.116.11.
DNS Leak Test
For my second test, I used the infamous Perfect Privacy DNS Leak Test to double-check the results above. As you can see below, nothing reveals your true identity or location. Only a single DNS server was detected using the IP: 18.104.22.168.
Since I am quite paranoid about my privacy, I decided to conduct another test from the famous IPLeak.net website. The results showed that the public IP is the same: 22.214.171.124 and the DNS server too: 126.96.36.199!
