In this Windscribe VPN review guide for New Zealand Users, we’ll look at some of the “decider” factors such as jurisdiction, pricing, streaming, speed, security, trustworthiness, and more to give you a full picture of this VPN provider.
Launched in 2016 and headquartered in Canada, Windscribe quickly started as one of the best newbie services in the marketplace. It took a fresh approach to a crowded market, presenting an incredibly versatile product.
Currently, Windscribe advertises that it provides top-notch encryption and inexpensive access to a huge number of streaming services in New Zealand. But are these claims true?
These features appeared too good to be true because there are so many VPNs on the market that provide comparable benefits but at a greater price in New Zealand. I had to assess its actual quality for myself.
When I conduct my investigation, I’ll start by considering some important issues, such as: is Windscribe safe in New Zealand? Can you use Windscribe for torrenting in New Zealand? Does it unblock Netflix in New Zealand? and lastly, does Windscribe keep logs in New Zealand?
I rigorously tested the Windscribe app’s security, speeds, and unblocking features to see how well it worked. I also performed various leak tests on it and looked at how well it functions for torrenting in New Zealand.
Additionally, I put its free version through rigorous testing to determine whether the 10GB data cap was adequate for the typical user.
Overall, I was satisfied with a lot of the features offered by Windscribe, but it lacks certain crucial ones, including support, gaming, privacy, and speed in New Zealand.
If anything, I do appreciate the “free” plan offered by the plan with a generous 10 GB bandwidth limit. However, if you are looking for a one-stop solution for all your VPN needs, Windscribe may not be the best provider.

Jurisdiction: Where is Windscribe Based?
Windscribe jurisdiction is in one of the founding countries of the 5 Eyes Alliance, Canada. This automatically reduces its credibility quite a lot, as the country imposes mandatory data retention and mass surveillance laws on residents.
Surely, Justin Trudeau has worked hard on developing such a “progressive” image of the country, but their legal framework with regard to “privacy” are highly invasive and unjust. Their government regularly cooperates with ISPs, telecom providers, etc.
It also indulges in intelligence sharing with other nations as part of the 5/9/14 Eyes Alliances. Therefore, while VPNs may not necessarily be “illegal” in the country, they are mandated to share all personal data with the government.
Security: Is Windscribe a Secure VPN in New Zealand?
Is Windscribe safe in New Zealand? Well, after going in-depth into Windscribe VPN’s location, logging policy, Windscribe encryption and apps, I can say without any second thoughts the VPN is not a safe choice in New Zealand. I will break down the “why’s” in the sections below for your ease of understanding.
Logging Policy
Since Windscribe is located in Canada, part of the Five Eyes surveillance agreement, they do indulge in the illegal accessing of citizens’ metadata. Not to mention, ISPs in Canada are supposed to comply with Bill C-11 (Anti-Piracy Legislation).
Add this to their lack of a zero logs policy, and things get messy. Windscribe does indulge in the recording of connections logs and IP addresses “for a short or indefinite period of time.” I have provided a screenshot of Windscribe privacy policy below.
If you analyze it, you will notice that Windscribe states they record your bandwidth and even timestamps to “prevent abuse and weed out inactive accounts.” However, this is still a recording of crucial information, which isn’t safe at all.
Encryption and Protocols
Windscribe does not offer much versatility regarding the protocols available for connection. It uses the most secure option on the market, OpenVPN. Considering that this is the preferred choice for a majority of VPN users, it is not a bad decision by the provider.
You can easily establish a secure connection via UDP (default mode). If you are facing trouble connecting via UDP, the VPN will automatically shift to TCP to eliminate delayed connections and downtimes.
This may reduce speeds but offers exceptional security. If TCP does not work either, there is a Stealth mode available. It is the best option for use in countries that boast extremely strict internet laws, like China.
For encryption, Windscribe uses AES-256 ciphers coupled with SHA-512 authentication and the strongest 4096-bit RSA key for handshaking – in addition to supporting Perfect Forward Secrecy using Diffie Hellman (DHE).
App File Check
For a complete security review on Windscribe VPN, I decided to check their apps for viruses on VirusTotal. Unfortunately, one of the security vendors has flagged its URL as malicious.
Advanced Security Features: What are the Advanced Security Features of Windscribe in New Zealand?
Though Windscribe VPN does lose some points because of its questionable logging policy and Windscribe headquarters in an “Internet Enemy” jurisdiction, it tries to make up for it by offering a good list of security features in New Zealand. These include:
Windscribe Kill Switch
All Windscribe applications come equipped with a built-in kill switch feature. It typically protects your identity and information following the disconnection of the VPN service.
Kill Switch does this by disabling the internet on your device until the VPN client regains connectivity through the encrypted tunnel to keep your identity secure in New Zealand.
Firewall
In addition to a Kill Switch feature, Windscribe comes equipped with a handy Firewall feature. This works hand-in-hand with the kill switch. It ensures that there are no packet leaks.
Especially when the connection drops (as the OS itself will make requests behind the scenes), with a firewall, all connectivity outside of the VPN remains blocked. This guarantees there are no leaks at all in New Zealand.
Ad and Tracker Blocking
One of the best things about the Windows Client is that it comes with built-in ad and tracker-blocking features. When you access certain websites, they may leave tracker cookies in your browser.
This means your internet activity is not safe from the eyes of others. However, with Windscribe automatically blocking ads and trackers, you do not have to worry about compromising privacy.
IPv6 and DNS Leak Protection
Another exceptional trait of Windscribe is that it offers IPv6 and DNS leak protection. All Windscribe DNS requests go through an incredibly secure tunnel, which ensures there are no leaks whatsoever.
The client also overrides your ISP’s DNS. This guarantees that they cannot snoop on your activity. To activate this feature, you will have to connect via Stealth – a TCP protocol via Stunnel.
Cruise Control
This unique feature built into the Windscribe client automatically selects the best server according to your location and network speed. This allows users from all over the world to receive nothing but the best service.
The VPN will keep rerouting you to locations that are receiving less load/traffic. However, users can still manually shift to a server if they want to bypass geo-restricted content.
Double Hop
Windscribe enables users to leverage DoubleVPN, a new form of protocol that uses two Windscribe server locations for masking your IP address and traffic even further.
For instance, on one side, you can connect to Canada while simultaneously to somewhere in the UK. This may slow down your internet, but it offers double the protection – hence why it goes by the name “Double Hop.”
Secure.link
In addition to their VPN product, Windscribe offers a separate Secure.link URL shortening service. It typically allows users to create secure links from their browser by simply right-clicking on any page and hitting the “Copy Secure.link” button.
You can even manually paste any website URL here. The website will scan the destination page for known ad beacons and trackers and alert users by generating a “report card.”
Cookie Monster
This feature from Windscribe typically helps in keeping track of cookies after enabling them on your browsers. It helps in identifying cookies with trackers, so you can disable them.
Split Personality
Windscribe’s infamous Split Personality helps in rotating your user agent to minimize the fingerprinting probability. A user agent is a technology that recognizes the type of operating system.
R.O.B.E.R.T
Another remarkable feature, the R.O.B.E.R.T from Windscribe, is a malware/ad/tracker blocker that allows you to stay protected from irritating pop-ups and viruses while visiting different websites.
Dedicated IPs
Windscribe is among the few VPNs in the marketplace that offers the option of buying a static IP; either from a data center (costing $2.00 (NZ$3.55/mo.) or through a residential connection (priced at $8.00 (NZ$14.18 per month) in New Zealand.
Windflix
As part of its latest features, Windscribe has introduced “Windflix” servers for unblocking the US and UK Netflix libraries. Sadly, it does not work as expected, and I received inconsistent performance on Windflix.
Leaks: Does Windscribe Hide Your IP in New Zealand?
Yes, Windscribe VPN is safe for the most part and does not leak your IP, DNS, or WebRTC information in New Zealand. Here are the tools I used to test Windscribe’s grittiness in protecting your real identity, along with the results.
WebRTC and HTTP Request Leaks:

Servers: How Many Servers Does Windscribe Offer?
Windscribe has not mentioned the exact number of servers on its official website. However, with my manual count, the provider offers approximately around 480+ servers in 63 countries, covering 110 cities with the Windscribe premium VPN plan.
However, if you get the free Windscribe VPN, you get access to 10 server Windscribe locations, such as the US, UK, Canada, Hong Kong, France, and more. In general, North America and Western Europe have the most coverage.
On the other hand, Windscribe VPN asserts that it only has physical servers, which implies that due to regulatory restrictions, it can be challenging to cover all nations. But given that the server is called “Fake Antarctica – Troll Station,” it’s hard for me to think they genuinely have servers there.
Moreover, keep in mind that using Windscribe servers close to your location will result in faster connection times. On Windscribe VPN’s official website, you can also check the status of the servers, including their usage and availability.
The only VPN I am aware of that gives its servers clever names is Windscribe. You can connect to “Las Vegas – Casino,” “Miami – Florida Man,” or “Philadelphia – Fresh Prince,” for instance. This humorous addition gives Windscribe some personality, and I truly dig it.
Server locations
Locations | Countries | |
---|---|---|
The Americas | 60+ | 5+ |
Asia Pacific | 30+ | 10+ |
Europe | 60+ | 30+ |
Middle East, India, and Africa | 15+ | 5+ |
Fake Antarctica | 1 | – |
With the exception of those in India, Russia, and South Africa, the majority of servers support Windscribe P2P.
Moreover, there are 10 countries from this list of servers that are available to free users:
- US
- UK
- Canada
- The Netherlands
- Germany
- Hong Kong
- Romania
- France
- Switzerland
- Norway
Is Windscribe Good for Torrenting in New Zealand?
As far as torrenting is concerned, Windscribe torrenting offers good performance to piraters around the world. Although some servers deliver slow speeds, you still face troubles in downloading torrent files and unblocking various torrent sites.
For extra security, Windscribe torrents also enjoy a strong firewall system that prevents IP, DNS, and WebRTC leaks outside of the encrypted tunnel. This helps keep you anonymous at all times when engaged in p2p/file sharing.
Does Windscribe Work in China?
No, Windscribe fails at bypassing the “Great Firewall” in China, offering almost no incentives to residents or expats alike. Firstly, they do not offer a mirror Chinese website that can allow residents inside the country to subscribe to a plan or download their apps.
Secondly, Windscribe does not offer any Chinese-specific servers, which means expats cannot access local content through Chinese websites like iQiYi (爱奇艺), QQ Video(QQ视频), Toudou (土豆), Youku (优酷), and others.
Streaming: Does Windscribe Work for Netflix and Other Streaming Sites in New Zealand?
For buffer-free streaming, I was able to unblock Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, Disney+, and BBC iPlayer. The reason it worked so effectively is that Windscribe enables you to access geo-restricted streaming services by using a propriety spoofing algorithm (called Location Warp).
Additionally, I was impressed that I could unlock all of these platforms using Windscribe’s free edition, which also leverages Location Warp. You can get 10GB of data per month on a free account if you sign up with an email address, and you can get 15GB if you tweet about Windscribe. You will be able to watch in HD for just over 7 hours using that.
I put the streaming capabilities of Windscribe to the test on my laptop, tablet, and Android phone. The native Windscribe app was used to test it out on my Fire TV Stick, and it was a success.
However, one minor issue is that videos with Windscribe took a little longer to load than they would with my base connection.
Can Windscribe unblock Netflix?
I was able to unblock US Netflix as well as libraries in Canada, Japan, and the UK, using the dedicated Windscribe Netflix servers.
With the exception of Japan, which is exclusively available on the premium service, the free app unblocked all of these regions.
I opened Netflix and established a connection with the Atlanta server in my initial test. I watched “High Water” with a buffer-free experience in HD quality.
“High Water” on US Netflix
Using the Denver server, I also obtained comparable findings. The only difference was that the movie took three extra seconds to load, but even so, this is still a remarkable outcome.
Can Windscribe unblock Hulu?
Using the Atlanta server, I was able to access Hulu.
“The Alaska Daily” on Hulu
I was able to enjoy one of my favorites, The Alaska Daily, in crisp HD, thanks to the Windscribe’s minimum speed loss percentage. The fact that there were no lapses in quality throughout the playback astounded me.
Can Windscribe unblock Disney+?
Disney+ was unblocked on all 6 of the US servers I used. I had easy access to all of my favorite movies while connected to servers in New York, Los Angeles, Denver, Las Vegas, and Atlanta.
“The Lion King” on Disney+
The page loaded in around 3 seconds, then each video loaded in about 5 seconds. However, after they began playing, I didn’t face any buffering issues while watching the movies.
Can Windscribe unblock Amazon Prime Video?
Although it didn’t work on the first try, I was able to watch Amazon Prime Video. On my first try, the videos wouldn’t load.
“Rick and Morty” on Amazon Prime Video
However, I was able to immediately begin playing movies and TV series after I had just reloaded the page.
It didn’t pause to buffer and the quality never dipped below HD.
Can Windscribe unblock HBO Max?
HBO Max was simple to load. Normally I have trouble unblocking this site. However, the Atlanta server of Windscribe made it work right away.
“Pennyworth: The Origin of Batman’s Butler” on HBO Max
The movie loaded in 2 seconds and played immediately without buffering. On the Atlanta server, it performed equally well, except videos started a little later (approximately 5 seconds).
Can Windscribe unblock BBC iPlayer?
Windscribe made it simple to access BBC iPlayer. I was impressed that all of the videos loaded instantly and had the best quality set.
“Superman & Lois” on BBC iPlayer
Despite downloading a couple of large files in the background, the picture’s quality stayed constant.
Can Windscribe also unblock ITV, All 4, YouTube, and Spotify?
I could even unblock All 4 with the UK server of Windscribe. Since US streaming services are more widely used, they receive the majority of VPNs’ attention.
“2 Broke Girls” on All 4
Due to this, it can be difficult to locate a service that is compatible with UK systems, but Windscribe’s UK server was excellent.
Windscribe could unblock every platform which I tried. This is remarkable, considering that it has a smaller server network than other providers like ExpressVPN or NordVPN.
The servers that it does have are incredibly trustworthy for getting around geo-blocks.
Speed: How Fast Is Windscribe VPN in New Zealand?
Windscribe delivers mediocre speed, averaging at 69.25 Mbps in download and 64.74 Mbps in upload on a 100 Mbps connection. I came about these results after performing a Windscribe speed test on different servers.
The process involved connecting to different servers in the US, UK, and Australia and analyzing the performance when downloading torrents or streaming on different video-on-demand (VoD) services online.
On the US server, I received 72.45 Mbps in download and 68.99 Mbps in upload with a ping of 115 ms.
On the UK server, I received 68.22 Mbps in download and 60.64 Mbps in upload with a ping of 126 ms.
On the Australian server, I received 67.10 Mbps in download and 64.61 Mbps in upload with a ping of 111 ms.
Compatibility: Can I Use Windscribe VPN On All My Devices in New Zealand?
Windscribe VPN offers dedicated applications for all famous platforms/devices. This includes Windows, Mac, and Linux operating systems, Google Chrome, Firefox, and Opera browsers, and iOS, Android, and Blackberry smartphones in New Zealand.
You even have support for DD-WRT and Tomato routers, along with config generators for Windscribe OpenVPN, IKEv2, and SOCKS5 for you to use manually if you do not trust the VPN’s own client applications in New Zealand.
Windscribe for Windows, Mac, and Linux in New Zealand
Windscribe’s desktop apps are quite simplistic in design, boasting a small and easy-to-use interface, which presents you with a list-based map selection navigation and other more important options in the hamburger icon.
As far as Linux is concerned, the beta version of this VPN is out in the market. It supports four different distros that include Ubunto 18.04, CentOS 6+, Debian 9, and Fedora 22+.
Windscribe Browser Extensions in New Zealand
Windscribe browser extensions look and work identically to their desktop counterparts on all platforms. It boasts the same streamlined appearance with an uncomplicated set of options and menus, which allows you to configure VPN connections instantly.
You can also choose to “Whitelist” sites that you often visit and want to load fully, such as Facebook or work-related websites. The extension even provides information regarding your previous and current IP address and the bandwidth remaining.
Windscribe for Android and iOS in New Zealand
The Android and iOS apps of Windscribe can be downloaded directly from the website or via the dedicated Google Play and Apple Stores. They adopt a neat and clean interface with dominant light blue colors.
Where the Android version uses the OpenVPN (UDP) protocol by default, the iOS counterparts use the IKEv2 protocol. For the most part, the performance is the same across both devices.
How many devices can I use with Windscribe in New Zealand?
Windscribe allows unlimited simultaneous connections, which means you can use the VPN on an unlimited number of devices at once in New Zealand.
Why is Windscribe not working on my iPhone in New Zealand?
If the VPN is not working on your iPhone, then it is a possibility that the network you are on might be blocking the Windscribe connection.
Try connecting to a different Wi-Fi network or switching to your cellular data to check if Windscribe starts working again.
Why is Windscribe so slow in New Zealand?
Disable anti-virus or firewall software. Avira, Kaspersky, and other programs look through your network data as part of their operations.
This can occasionally result in the connection to the Windscribe servers being slowed down or completely stopped, causing poor speeds and frequent disconnects.
Set-Up & Installation: Is Windscribe Easy to Set Up and Install in New Zealand?
The installation procedure for Windscribe is simple to follow. The browser extension or desktop program may be installed in a matter of seconds in New Zealand.

Windscribe Trustpilot Review
Windscribe VPN has received an average rating of 4.8/5 on Trustpilot from a total of 6990 user reviews. Needless to say, this is quite a remarkable score and indicates that users are satisfied with the provider.
Over 95% of the users have given Windscribe a “5-star” or “4-star,” which says a lot about this VPN’s credibility.
Windscribe VPN Review Reddit
As with any other VPN service, Windscribe has mixed reviews on Reddit. While some users have had a positive experience, others tend to dislike the provider entirely due to poor speeds and issues with the free account.
However, most reviews do agree on the fact that Windscribe offers decent bandwidth speeds, as you can see in the reviews below where a few Redditors are talking about using it for downloading files, etc.
Customer Support Review
According to my Windscribe VPN review, the service has quite an active support system. Although there is no live chat available, you can talk to its bot, “Garry” to solve your problems. And even if that doesn’t work, you have plenty of other options available for receiving assistance.
As the most basic method, you have email support at your disposal. If you encounter any issues while using the VPN, you can simply give the provider an email at hello@windscribe.com.
In addition to this, there is a separate Support page. Here you can receive help via various methods. First, you can opt to check out setup guides. Second, you can visit the FAQs page.
Third, you can submit a ticket, which is almost as similar as sending an email.
Windscribe’s Subreddit is very active, and the community members help each other. You can navigate to their subreddit page by clicking on it on the support page.
The choice is yours, but we will discuss each option below so that you gain better insight into the service’s reliability.
Below is a screenshot of the Setup Guides page. Here you will find step-to-step instructions for configuring Windscribe on a multitude of platforms, browsers, devices, routers, and even software.

Windscribe VPN Review: Do I Recommend Windscribe VPN for New Zealand Users?
Concluding this Windscribe VPN review, after thoroughly testing the provider, I would definitely recommend Windscribe VPN if you’re looking for a free VPN that can get your torrenting, streaming, and browsing job done without any costs.
The fact that Windscribe VPN allows for an infinite number of simultaneous connections and provides a decent free edition with 10GB of monthly data is particularly wonderful.
Overall, the paid plan is also great. However, in most other respects, it falls short of other top VPNs.
Even though ExpressVPN is a little more expensive, I would actually suggest it instead because it is equally as good for streaming, has top-notch security and privacy features, operates in China, and offers a round-the-clock live chat service in New Zealand.
