Where PureVPN stands tall as a budget-friendly yet reliable service, CyberGhost is an equally impressive provider with much to offer. Which VPN is better?
To get the answer, check out this CyberGhost Vs PureVPN comparison research guide, where I will be pitting both providers against each other on a number of crucial aspects:
Pricing and Discounts
In terms of pricing, both PureVPN and CyberGhost strike the perfect balance between affordability and value. Albeit, the monthly plans may seem a little costly.

|Operating System Apps||Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, Linux, and Fire TV||Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, Linux, Fire TV|
|Manual Install Devices||Linux, Routers, Set-Top Boxes||Routers, TVs, and more|
|Split Tunneling||Yes (All Apps)||Yes (All Apps)|
|Free Extras||Official Kodi addon, ad-blocker, malware-scanner, browser extensions for Chrome and Firefox||Wi-Fi Protection, DNS and IP leak protection|
Upon comparing both providers on the basis of features, it becomes clear that PureVPN and CyberGhost are equally matched opponents.
PureVPN adds to this list a dedicated extension for Kodi. As far as router support is concerned, you have manual setup guides for setting up both providers on Tomato or DD-WRT devices.
Where CyberGhost supports simultaneous connections on 7 devices, PureVPN only supports multi-logins on 5 devices. Split Tunneling is available on all apps for both providers.
PureVPN even offers dedicated IPs, ad/tracker blockers, malware scanners, NAT firewall, and a myriad of other technologies to boost your security and privacy (missing with CyberGhost).
In terms of unblocking, CyberGhost managed to do quite well in our tests. Albeit, there are some areas of improvement, due to the inconsistency in performance.
You do have a “search” bar available that allows you to locate specific servers for different platforms, but sometimes even they give a little trouble in delivering consistent unblocking.
PureVPN, on the other hand, was free from such issues. Thanks to the usage of strong obfuscation technologies, bypassing geo-restrictions was a piece of cake.
Testing it on different streaming platforms revealed that the provider faced no issues in unblocking popular services on all of its apps. These include their “browser extensions” too.
All apps also come with a “popular websites” option across all devices that lists all famous streaming sites. Simply click on the channel you want to unblock and get access to it instantly, minus any hassles.
Blackholing VPN servers, DNS poisoning, DNS hijacking, and Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) attacks deployed by “The Great Firewall” make bypassing geo-restrictions in China a menacing task.
Sadly, CyberGhost fails at offering any incentives to expats or residents in China. The Romanian-based provider has no mirror website to download apps in the country. Neither does it have Chinese servers.
Among these 6 are located in Beijing and 6 in Shanghai, making it possible for those located outside the country to access Chinese-specific content, wherever they are in the world.
Setup and Interface
|Automatic Setup Wizard||Windows, Mac, Android, iOS||Windows, Mac, Android, iOS|
|Main Location Selection||List-based||List-based|
|Extra Settings Pages||Yes||Yes|
PureVPN uses a list-based location selection menu on all of its apps. The desktop, macOS, and linux versions are quite impressive and deliver exceptional user-friendliness.
The availability of different modes makes it easier for VPN users to connect with relevant servers and the configuration options are perfectly suited for the tech-savvy.
Users even have the ability of changing ports manually, which helps in bypassing geo-restrictions and VPN bans on streaming sites and countries with tough internet laws.
Meanwhile, the mobile apps adopt a darker appearance with easy accessibility of servers, features, and configurations. And the browser extensions even allow for Netflix unblocking directly within the browser.
CyberGhost’s desktop apps feature a broader interface, as compared to PureVPN. However, this does not mean their clients compromise on user-friendliness or ease-of-use.
In fact, the CG7 client has greatly improved in terms of aesthetics, accessibility of servers/features. It looks incredibly good and easy to navigate, be it on Windows or macOS.
The mobile apps are equally impressive and boast the same dark and yellow design. They give users the ability to let the app choose a nearby server, based on distance and load.
You can also select servers that have been optimized for torrenting and streaming or for accessing different platforms like Netflix, BBC iPlayer, and more.
|Total Number of Servers||2,000||6,100+|
As compared to CyberGhost, PureVPN falls awfully short in “server numbers”. Where CyberGhost supports a network infrastructure of 6,100+ servers, PureVPN hosts a database of 2,000+ only.
This makes CyberGhost the leading provider in terms of server count. However, what PureVPN lacks in server count, it makes up for it on the basis of “server availability”.
CyberGhost houses servers in only 90+ countries. Meanwhile, PureVPN has servers in over 140 countries worldwide, granting more functionality to users in different countries.
To get a better idea on the performance of both providers, I conducted a speed analysis. This process required the testing of different servers from both providers on a myriad of aspects.
These include streaming on sites like Netflix, browser the internet, downloading torrenting files, or playing online games. For the task, we picked up 4 random servers from PureVPN and CyberGhost.
In bare speed tests on a 100 Mbps connection, PureVPN managed to deliver an average of 91 mbps in uploads and downloads, indicating a speed loss of 9%.
CyberGhost touched the same tangent, with only a .2% difference in speed loss, recording an average speed of 90.80 Mbps in upload and downloads.
|VPN Protocols||PPTP, L2TP, IPSec, IKEv2, OpenVPN||L2TP/IPSec, PPTP, OpenVPN|
|OpenVPN Data Encryption||AES-256-CBC||AES-256-CBC|
|OpenVPN Control Channel Encryption||RSA-4096||RSA-4096|
|App Security||Kill Switch and DNS Leak Protection||Kill Switch and DNS Leak Protection|
|DNS Status||Private DNS||Private DNS|
PureVPN offers support for a huge range of protocols. This includes PPTP, L2TP, IKEv2, SSTP, and OpenVPN (TCP and UDP) to give users of all kinds freedom of choice.
As default though, PureVPN deploys the OpenVPN protocol on all devices, with the exception of iOS devices that use the IKEv2 protocol for faster speeds and security.
For encryption, the provider utilizes AES-256-CBC cipher with HMAC SHA1 hash authentication for the data channel, which is quite impressive and highly-secure.
Meanwhile, it deploys the AES-256-CBC cipher with HMAC SHA384 hash authentication and RSA-4096 handshake encryption for the control channel.
CyberGhost is equally powerful and offers support for PPTP, L2TP/IPSec, IKEv2 and OpenVPN (TCP and UDP). By default, their Windows and macOS apps use the IKEv2 protocol.
However, you do have the ability of shifting to OpenVPN, whenever needed. Android apps use the OpenVPN protocol and iOS apps use the IKEv2 protocol too.
For encryption, CyberGhost uses AES-256-CBC cipher with SHA-256 hash authentication on the data channel, and RSA-4096 key encryption and SHA384 hash authentication on the control channel.
To get a better idea on the app security, I conducted a leak test on PureVPN and CyberGhost. The process involved the usage of 6 different tools to check for;
WebRTC and HTTP Request Leaks:
IPv4/IPv6 and Torrent IP Leaks:
Both PureVPn and CyberGhost aced all the tests from the 6 different tools above and did not reveal our original IP, DNS, or WebRTC information.
|Sign Up Information||Email Address||Email Address|
|Anonymous Payment Methods||Various Cryptocurrencies||Only Bitcoin|
In terms of privacy, both PureVPN and CyberGhost manage to do quite well. Their headquarters are based in locations away from the prying eyes of the 5/9/14 Alliances.
This keeps users safe from worrying about mandatory data retention and mass surveillance laws that otherwise trigger a sense of paranoia in individuals sharing private info online.
|Static IPs||8+ Countries||7+ Locations|
Both PureVPN and CyberGhost support a shared/static infrastructure to meet the varied demands of their customers. Albeit, the availability of IPs varies by provider.
CyberGhost has dedicated IPs in a limited 7 locations with 2 of them being located in the United States, 2 in the United Kingdom, 1 in France, 1 in Germany and 1 in Canada.
PureVPN, on the other hand, has static IPs in 8+ countries with a higher count. Countries supported include US, UK, Australia, Canada, Germany, Malta, Hong Kong, Singapore.
|Searchable Knowledge Base||Yes||Yes|
|Average Email Response Time||39 Minutes||1 Hour|
|Live Chat Support||Yes||No|
PureVPN and Cyberghost both offer support in the form of live chat, video guides, knowledge base, FAQs, email, and tickets. All of these are good options to receive support.
The second best option for most is email support. So, I went a little further with my testing to analyze the response times from both providers as well.
Below you can see the stats of both providers on the basis of four different questions.
|Question||Initial Response Time||Number of Emails||Question Answered|
|Is PureVPN good for Torrenting?||25 Minutes||1||Yes|
|Does PureVPN work with Netflix?||39 Minutes||1||Yes|
|Can I Install PureVPN on LibreELEC||50 Minutes||1||Yes|
|How to setup PureVPN on Firestick?||44 Minutes||1||Yes|
|Question||Initial Response Time||Number of Emails||Question Answered|
|How does CyberGhost VPN Work?||52 Minutes||1||Yes|
|Is CyberGhost VPN safe to use?||59 Minutes||1||Yes|
|Can CyberGhost unblock Netflix?||1 Hour 2 Minutes||1||Yes|
|Does CyberGhost work with Hulu?||48 Minutes||1||Yes|
For the most part, (PureVPN Vs CyberGhost) are equally matched competitors. However, since there can be only ONE winner, I will have to give this to the inexpensive yet reliable PureVPN.
CyberGhost did give a tough time to PureVPN, but its lack of incentives for Chinese users and the instability for unblocking streaming sites, resulted in it losing some points.
Meanwhile, PureVPN is budget-friendly, has a good server count, unblocks all streaming platforms smoothly, and works in China. If that was not enough, it is even commanded by Trustpilot and endorsed by Forbes.
