Surfshark aced my performance tests, delivering amazing latency, download, and upload speeds, be it for streaming, torrenting, unblocking, or regular browsing!

Surfshark is a budget-friendly, all-rounder service that goes head-to-head against top competitors like NordVPN and ExpressVPN. For the low-price, Surfshark unblocks all popular streaming platforms, has an audited no-logs policy, 1,700+ servers in 63 countries, and a lot more.

It was introduced back in 2018, but has quickly grown to become a top choice for many privacy-conscious users and entertainment-geeks. This is why I will be performing a thorough Surfshark speed test to see if it is actually worth the money or not!

Surfshark Speed Test: Overview

For my speed testing on Surfshark VPN, I utilized my local 100Mbps connection and connected to different servers in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and Germany. For each server, I conducted an analysis with the Ookla Speed Test tool for latency, download, and upload speeds.

After receiving the results, I plotted all the performance metrics in a table with the percentage changes on these servers, as compared to the average speeds I receive on my 100Mbps connection. Refer to the statistics below to analyze the level of speed loss to expect with Surfshark.

VPN Server Latency Change Download Speed Change Upload Speed Change
US 22% 5.6% 9.3%
UK 40% 10.1% 14.2%
Canada 10% 7.8% 8.5%
Australia 36% 10.9% 12.8%
Germany 44% 9.5% 11.6%

US Server

Upon connecting to a US server with Surfshark on my 100Mbps connection, I noticed a minimal speed loss of 5.6% in downloads (94.39Mbps), and 9.3% in the uploads (90.63Mbps) with a ping time of 61ms. This indicates Surfshark’s US servers are quite fast and speedy!

VPN Latency Tests

Surfshark VPN delivering amazing results during our VPN latency test. When connected to their servers, the ping time wasn’t incredibly high, as when not connected to a VPN. At the time of testing, I was receiving around 50ms on my standard internet connection.

I compared this average with the VPN latency of different servers. From the results below, you can see that the Canadian server has the lowest latency of all, followed by Australian and US servers. All of them stay close to the average I receive from my ISP.

Download Speed Tests

VPNs change your location by cloaking your IP address and giving you a new one, then adding encryption to the connection, as to secure all incoming/outgoing traffic. With this extra encryption passing through a different protocol, your average speeds are bound to reduce a little.

To get a better idea about Surfshark’s download speeds, I conducted a test and then plotted all the results in one location. As you can see, the US server gives us the highest speeds on a 100Mbps network, while the slowest speeds were from the Australian server.

Upload Speed Tests

Following its lead in my latency tests, the Canadian server once again had the best impact on upload speeds. It managed to deliver an amazing 92.44Mbps on my 100Mbps connection, showing a minimal loss of only 8.5%, which is quite remarkable the say the least.

Of course, the lowest we received were again from the UK server. Therefore, it is safe to deduce that as you connect to servers far away, you may notice a higher speed loss. However, even so, a 14.2% change in the upload performance is not bad.
