PureVPN manages to defy all odds to deliver fast speeds on almost all servers with some even delivering a minimal speed loss of 4% when connected!

PureVPN ranks among the most popular VPNs, designed to encrypt your data and keep it safe from cyber threats. At the same time, it provides unmatched unblocking capabilities, allowing users to stream a new world of entertainment on platforms like Netflix, Hulu, BBC iPlayer, etc.

Best part of all: users have a 31-day free trial available for testing the service. Some reviewers, however, complain that PureVPN does not offer great speeds. With that in mind, I decided to conduct a PureVPN Speed Test myself and see if what others are saying is true or not.

PureVPN Speed Test: Overview

To conduct a speed test on PureVPN, I used my standard internet connection of 100Mbps, and connected to different servers around the world to analyze ping, download, and upload speeds (the lesser, the better) via the Ookla Speed Test tool.

Below you can see the percentage changes when connecting to different servers like in the US, UK, Australia, Germany, and France. This gives users a clear picture of how much speed loss you can expect when connecting to PureVPN:

VPN Server Latency Change Download Speed Change Upload Speed Change
US 41.2% 4.0% 9.8%
UK 45.7% 8.9% 10.4%
Australia 24.28% 6.4% 8.7%
Germany 71.42% 12.3% 14.9%
France 58.57% 10.6% 13.1%

US Server

Upon connecting to a US server on my 100Mbps connection, I noticed a minimal speed loss of 4.0% in downloads (95.97Mbps), and 9.8% in the uploads (90.13Mbps) with a ping time of 99ms. The statistics show that PureVPN is incredibly fast on US servers.

UK Server

When connecting to a UK server on my 100Mbps connection, I noticed a slight increase in the speed loss with 8.9% in downloads (91.03Mbps), and 10.4% in the uploads (89.53Mbps) with a ping time of 102ms. The difference is still not that much and quite good.

Australia Server

Upon connecting to an Australian server on my 100Mbps connection, I noticed better results in the speed loss with a 6.4% change in downloads (93.55Mbps), and 8.7% in the uploads (91.22Mbps) with a ping time of 87ms. The Australian servers are faster than UK.

Germany Server

When connecting to a Germany server on my 100Mbps connection, there was a significant increase in the speed loss with a 12.3% change in downloads (87.69Mbps), and 14.9% in the uploads (85.08Mbps) with a ping time of 120ms. However, it is still below the 15% change mark!

France Server

Upon connecting to an France server on a 100Mbps connection, the results were mediocre with a  speed loss of 10.6% in downloads (89.31Mbps), and 13.1% in the uploads (86.99Mbps) with a ping time of 100ms. Not as good as US and Australian servers, but speed change still under 15%.

VPN Latency Tests

The latency you receive on different servers is an underrated factor of testing a VPN’s performance. If the ping is too high, you will face connectivity issues. In simple words, high latency will equal to more lagging and buffering issues.

Luckily for you, there isn’t that much of a significant different in the latency I received, when connected to a VPN, and when not connected to a VPN. I usually get about 70ms on normal days, and found the percentage change by comparing the VPN latency on different servers.

As you can see from the results below, out of the 5 servers, the Australian one has the lowest latency. It doesn’t reduce the ping time, but it stays close to the average I receive on my normal internet connection from the ISP.

Download Speed Tests

The most important aspect of any internet connection is the download speed you receive. When connecting to a VPN, the average speeds do take a hit, due to the added encryption and information passing through a secure tunnel.

For this reason, I have listed all the download speeds in one location. As you can see, the US server gives us the highest speeds on a 100Mbps network. It manages to deliver a good 95.97Mbps, showing only a minimal speed loss of 4.0% when connected to the VPN.

From all the servers, the slowest download speeds I received were on the Germany server with a average of 87.69Mbps. This shows there is a 12.3% speed loss, but when compared to other VPNs that go above 15-20%, the download speed change is still quite less!

Upload Speed Tests

Following its lead in my latency tests, the Australian server once again had the lowest impact on upload speeds. It managed to deliver an amazing 91.22Mbps on my 100Mbps connection, showing a minimal loss of only 8.7%, which does not make a big difference at all.

Of course, the lowest we received were again from the Germany server. Therefore, it is safe to deduce that as you connect to servers far away, you may notice a higher speed loss. However, even so, a 14.9% change in upload is not bad.

Average Speed of PureVPN

On an average, PureVPN managed to deliver 91.51Mbps in download and 88.59Mbps in uploads, after testing their servers in 5 different locations. All in all, the speeds have improved considerably since we last tested the service.

Server Download Upload Ping
US 95.97Mbps 90.13Mbps 99ms
UK 91.03Mbps 89.53Mbps 102ms
Australia 93.55Mbps 91.22Mbps 87ms
Germany 87.69Mbps 85.08Mbps 120ms
France 89.31Mbps 86.99Mbps 111ms
Average 91.81Mbps 88.59Mbps 103ms

People Also Ask

Why is PureVPN so slow?

Oftentimes, slow speeds have nothing to do with the VPN. External issues like your firewall interfering, distant servers, and choosing an outdated protocol may result in poor speeds. For best performance, go for the OpenVPN protocol and select servers close to your location.

Is PureVPN fast?

According to our speed tests, PureVPN managed to do exceptionally well. Almost all servers delivered great performance with minimal speed loss. Even servers that were far away didn’t cross the 15% speed loss mark, which shows that you receive sufficient enough speeds for torrenting/unblocking!

What is a good VPN speed?

This varies on the basis of your internet connection. If you have a 100Mbps network, then a VPN should not have a speed loss exceeding 15%. Anything more than that can be considered a mediocre or average service, but PureVPN does quite well, as you can see in the guide above.

Is PureVPN good for gaming?

Yes, PureVPN is a great choice for gaming, due to its fast speeds, huge list of servers, and advanced features that include DDoS protection, DNS/IP leak protection, automatic kill switch, NAT firewall, and more. For the best gaming experience, choose a VPN server close to your location.

Is PureVPN good for Netflix?

If you want to unblock Netflix, there is no better option than PureVPN. The provider is among the few in the marketplace that offers dedicated servers for the platform. You can access them directly from the “popular websites” menu available in all applications and browser extensions.

Wrapping Things Up

With this, we come to an end to this PureVPN Speed Test guide. Based on the results, it is safe to say that PureVPN offers exceptional performance, whether that be for normal browsing, downloading torrents, streaming on Netflix, or playing online games!
