Based in Hong Kong, PandaPow VPN is a powerful service despite being not as big as some of the more established contemporaries in the market. It offers an interesting feature pack that includes unlimited bandwidth, access to 14 servers, a proprietary SSL based protocol, 7-day money back guarantee, compatible apps and a special Wifi VPN router.
But is it a best VPN yet? Well, we’ll find that our in our exclusive PandaPow Review 2018 featuring a holistic round up of all the major service aspects about the provider including critiques on pricing, app compatibility, customer support, protocols and more by BestVPN.co
Prices are often one of the most important things to consider with any provider. The most perfect kind of pricing plans in the VPN industry are those that offer all the features in all the plans, with the only difference being the duration for which the subscription lasts. And that’s exactly what we got at PandaPow.
The Provider has very uncomplicated pricing plans ranging from the monthly, quarterly and yearly subscriptions.
Subscription for a month will cost you $9, which is definitely a bit expensive, however, the price gets more balanced as you reach the quarterly and yearly plans priced at $24 and $84 respectively.
The price of a yearly plan is a bit high in our view and if it comes down within the more acceptable range of $65-$75, considering the features on offer, then it would definitely become more appealing to new users.
The one thing that we find the most disappointing aspect at many VPN providers is not offering a Free Trial. Offering one, no doubt, requires a high amount of investment, but the amount of integrity and credibility that is built in your user base because of that more than matches up or even exceeds the money spent.
Sadly, according to our PandaPow Review, the provider doesn’t offer a free trial, in the truest sense of the term, as well. It only provides a 7 Day money back guarantee as a cover for users in case they don’t like the service and wish to discontinue it.
PandaPow, we recommend that you guys work on adding a Free Trial to make your VPN more accessible to a wider range of potential users.
Like every other VPN provider nowadays, PandaPow also offer native apps for use on popular platforms like Windows, Macs, Android, and iOS. The Windows app was perhaps the best of the lot because it was much better geared to respond to feature access options. They all run the OpenVPN protocol by default, even on iOS, which is relatively a rare scenario as most providers don’t provide OpenVPN on iOS.
The Android app was not that hard to navigate either, but we did face some issues with regards to shaky connections. There were very little drops in service so that’s a big plus.
We would like to recommend PandaPow to brush up the apps a little bit and make them appear a bit more modern. Currently, the user interface on the Windows app resembles software interfaces from the 90s era.
ExpressVPN has perhaps the modern looking apps, followed closely by PureVPN, NordVPN and IPVanish, so PandaPow can look towards them for inspiration if they want to revamp their apps.
PandaPow also offers a special router which has the VPN preconfigured, so as to make it easy for you to run devices like Apple TVs, gaming consoles in a secure mode.
According to our PandaPow Review, the provider’s servers are well distributed in the most popular VPN access locations. With a PandaPow subscription, you will be allowed to access 120 + servers in 16 major locations with options ranging from the USA, UK, France, Netherlands, Hong Kong and Singapore among others.
However, the most promising aspect of the service is that the US servers were able to unblock Netflix US, a feat which even some more established VPN providers are unable to match. Hulu and Amazon Prime (US) worked fine as well.
But Pandapow still needs to add more servers if it’s to accommodate the growing population of those users who are now flocking to buy VPNs in order to access geo-restricted streaming sites like Netflix US. PandaPow needs to work hard to enable this if they are looking the resonance of their service in the VPN community. While the current mash up of servers is good enough for now, adding more servers to mix will definitely allow PandaPow in providing a more stellar service.
Netflix US unblocked by PandaPow while connected to the Los Angeles Server.
Netflix UK unblocked by PandaPow while connected to the London Server.
Netflix Netherlands unblocked by PandaPow while connected to the Amsterdam Server.
Netflix Japan unblocked by PandaPow while connected to the Tokyo Server.
Netflix Australia unblocked by PandaPow while connected to the Sydney Server.
Apart from Netflix focused locations, in the future, we would like to see the provider add more servers in other existing locations as well as in newer regions like the Middle East and South America.
PandaPow also offers a special service for Chinese users and this feature is included in all service packs.
A major buzz killer for us when reviewing PandaPow was that it doesn’t offer a 24/7 live chat feature as it would have paved the way for better facilitation of customers. PandaPow currently offers a ticketing system as a customer support function, making the resolution of any query or problem a cumbersome and time-consuming task.
PandaPow should really consider adding a faster, more agile customer facilitation module like a 24/7 live chat feature in order to provide a more rounded service experience for customers.
On all of its compatible app clients, PandaPow has deployed its own proprietary SSL-based protocol. This protocol, PandaPow claims, work to enable it to remain unblocked in countries like China and power a much more secure experience for users elsewhere on the globe.
And since the service is still up and running for Chinese users, we take the claim at face value and consider it to be highly acceptable as a VPN protocol.
But despite having said that, according to our PandaPow Review, its proprietary protocol seems to be nothing more than OpenVPN protocol itself and the Proprietary SSL-based protocol is just another name the company christened it with.
OpenVPN is the most secure VPN protocol and is the industry standard right now, so we would like to suggest to PandaPow to drop the fancy name and just mention that it uses OpenVPN protocol whenever asked.
As for the other protocols like PPTP, L2TP/IPSec, and IPSec, they are not supported on the compatible apps by PandaPow, however, if you can use them if you sideload the VPN on to your device without involving the apps.
The most popular way to set up a VPN for which no compatible app is offered is sideloading, but most of the time, this can be a very long and a time-consuming process, so to ease your troubles, PandaPow offers its own WifI VPN router.
This Wifi Router allows you to use any device under the cover of the VPN because it makes all the traffic go through its route, thereby making it automatically secure.
Setting up the Router is extremely easy and here’s how it’s done:
The PandaPow Wifi Router will cost you $99 for a year’s worth of VPN subscription and the router included.
This provider is one of the more promising new VPN services in the market and despite still being in its nascent stages it’s providing a great service to its users. It still has a long way to go before it can stand tall among the Top providers in the industry but what it lacks in the form of premium features, it makes up in the power of its security performance.
