Mullvad Review

Entirely uncomplicated, best speeds and a bit under-resourced, these three expressions can describe MullvadVPN in its entirety. A highly secure VPN service, MullvadVPN is one of the top performing VPNs out there, especially in terms of enabling faster speeds, unblocking Netflix and promoting a highly developed zero logging policy.

But there’s more about this service that you users need to know, including its pricing policy, its compatibility, the extent to which it enables ease of use, its server park and especially, is it a Best VPN or not?

So here is our comprehensive MullvadVPN review containing critiques on all aspects of this service and more by BestVPN.co!

MullvadVPN Pricing Review

VPNs used to be price insensitive to a very high extent around half a decade ago but as of now, with so many services offering high quality services, price, has become a contentious issue when it comes to VPN subscriptions.

Many providers are offering their services for dirt cheap rates which often go down for as low as $2/month especially if you opt for their long-term subscription plans. VPN price their plans in terms of the duration of the subscription you intend to opt for. Usually, the short term plans are expensive, while the long-term deals are cheaper. This pricing plan is the industry norm.

But it seems like MullvadVPN has kept itself away from such marketing tactics or from the greed to make as consumers subscribe to them as possible. The provider just offers a simple monthly plan for $5.71 (€5/month), nothing else.

An even more surprising thing here is that the provider doesn’t even have a dedicated pricing page on its site!

I really like this take on pricing from MullvadVPN and that’s because I know that this VPN is not resorting to any cheap gimmicks to get more sales coming in. Kudos to the provider for this and for me, this is perhaps the defining feature about the service.

Now coming to the payment methods offered by the provider, they are as follows:

mullvad payment methods

  • Bitcoin
  • Bitcoin Cash
  • Cash
  • Credit Card
  • Bankwire
  • PayPal
  • Activation Codes (Coupons, Affiliate subscriptions, offers etc)
  • Swish

As is evident from this list, MullvadVPN offers plenty of choice for users on how they want to pay for their subscriptions. They have three anonymous payment methods which include two forms of Cryptocurrencies i.e. Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash.

Cash payment is another secure payment option not offered by many other providers, so that’s a big plus for all those people who don’t use cryptos but want secure payment modes other than that.

MullvadVPN also offers a very unique sort of a Free Trial, whose duration is just 3 hours after you generate your unique account number and if you want to use the service after that, you will be charged for it.

MullvadVPN Server Network Review

Irrespective of how secure or robust or even high performance a VPN is, UI and UX have now become integral to a service’s overall brand image and they shouldn’t be ignored. And after seeing the page on which MullvadVPN’s server offerings are listed, I must say that the provider certainly needs to improve a lot on how it presents itself.

The way the servers are presented, it’s not in line with modern VPN website standards where every single feature like total server count etc. is mentioned very promptly.

But, when it comes to the performance of these servers, MullvadVPN outperforms even the best in the business, especially because of its stellar speeds and much needed stability.

Here is just one Speed Test that I ran on its New York Server:

Ping: 41 Ms

Download Speed: 85.96 Mbps

Upload Speed: 89.52 Mbps

Connection Real-Time Speed: 100 Mbps

Mullvad Speed test results

A speed loss in the range of just 10-15% in both upload and download speeds is truly top notch. Even some of the best providers in the industry have never been close to these figures whenever I tested them, so kudos to Team Mullvad for enabling such fast speeds across the entirety of its server park.

Now coming to stability, there were zero glitches in the server performance. Not even once was my connection down or did it get slow or even miserable. For those of you who don’t know, a wide majority of providers have the knack of making your connection unstable at least once every hour, so it become a norm of sorts, but not MullvadVPN.

Again, 10/10 for the consistent performance and stability of the server park.

Its servers are no less dependable when it comes to securing your privacy online and I can say it with assurance because when I went through MullvadVPN’s DNS leak and Web RTC leak tests, I found them to be extremely secure with zero leaks whatsoever.

The DNS leak test was from its New York Server.

The Web RTC leak test was also from the same server:

Mullvad Web rtc leak

But, despite all the security and speeds, MullvadVPN just managed to unblock Netflix US on only its New York Server (us-nyc-009), while the remaining ones remain blocked.

I was hoping that with such upscale performance on the speed and stability front, Mullvad would just zip past the Netflix VPN ban on a wide majority of its servers, but it didn’t, so that was a bit of a letdown definitely.

However, MullvadVPN some respite when I managed to unblock BBC iPlayer with at around 2 of its servers in the London and Manchester server agglomerations.

So I guess, the provider is not as bad with streaming, however, its not top notch as well. It can give you a good enough unblocking experience, but its of middle range value in this regard.

But one big redeeming factor for all those people who look forward to getting VPNs in order to add value to their entertainment experience is that, MullvadVPN is extremely friendly towards Torrenting and the fact that if offers fast speeds makes for it as a highly preferable service for those looking for a secure, fast Torrenting supportive VPN service.

MullvadVPN Security Review

To offer top notch security, a VPN provider needs to plug all sorts of holes from where the user can be left vulnerable from. MullvadVPN seems to have plugged in all the major gaps in this regard but there still, a few chinks in the armor that need addressing.

First up, MullvadVPN’s logging policy is perhaps its best security feature and that’s because the provider has explicitly mentioned each and every facet of the data it does not log in its privacy policy.

Heck! The provider has even gone on to even tell how it process cash payments and how it destroys the envelope and all of its non-money content once that money is taken it. That’s just how secure it is.

Mullvad logging policy

And one extremely likable feature that I noticed was how well its privacy policy is written. Its not the conventional, jargon scribbled gibberish that litters most other privacy policy documents and makes them next to unreadable, MullvadVPN’s privacy policy is well written and is enjoyable to go through. I recommend you to go through it definitely!

The provider doesn’t have any sort of DNS or Web RTC leaks as is evident by the screenshots I shared earlier in this guide, so it clarifies the extent to which the connection you make through the provider is secure.

MullvadVPN’s encryption level is AES 256 – military grade, which is industry level and on the security front, it is almost next to impenetrable.

However, the provider only offers two protocols, of which one is the open source OpenVPN and the other is an in-development protocol named Wireguard.

While many people are praising WireGuard and promoting it to be the next best thing to happen in the VPN industry and that’s because it enables much faster speeds than OpenVPN, I am a bit skeptical about it because its still not been put to real tests much and it remains to be seen whether it is vulnerable to zero-day attacks or not.

So I would advise you to just stick with OpenVPN, because you don’t take chances in your security ever. Even promises are not allowed here, only performance is acknowledged, which OpenVPN has and WireGuard doesn’t, so you know what my preferred choice exactly is in this regard.

Another feature I really liked was, and a highly important and innovative one when it comes down to protecting user anonymity online, is its Account generation number feature.

Well, conventionally, registration of a new account with a VPN provider requires you to submit your email ID at the very least, but MullvadVPN has a different take on how user’s accounts are created.

The provider generates a unique account number for an account and that is the only way you can log in to your account or initiate the payment process. This is just incredible and that’s because, it makes the user truly anonymous. Through this system, even if the authorities come and request for data extradition, MullvadVPN wont have anything to identify its users except for its list of account numbers, which are of no use to the authorities.

Other VPNs should definitely follow suit on this and stop collecting emails to create accounts just like MullvadVPN in order to make their service truly private and anonymous.

MullvadVPN also comes with a Kill Switch which works perfectly and ensures that your internet gets blocked when the VPN goes down so that your real identity doesn’t leak online through this issue.

Now, after the best security features, I will now go towards identifying the gaps in MullvadVPN’s security arsenal.

The firm behind Mullvad is Amagicom and it fully owned by founders Fredrik Strömberg and Daniel Berntsson.

Don’t see anything wrong there? Well, that’s because there is a crucial piece of info missing from there.

Amagicon is based in Sweden, which is a 14 Eyes Country.

14 Eyes is an alliance made of 14 nations that have data sharing and surveillance assistance agreements with each other, making Sweden, certainly a non-desirable location for a VPN to be calling its home.

And while, MullvadVPN has made sure that even if the authorities land up on its door, they wont get their hands on any sort of important data, thanks to its great logging policy, it is still not good that a VPN is based in a 14 Eyes Member country.

MullvadVPN App Compatibility and Usability Review

With people connecting to the internet through so many devices, it has become imperative for provides to offer dedicated compatibility to at least, all the popular devices and OS. These include apps for platforms like Windows, Macs, Androids and iOS.

The bigger services are now even increasing the platforms they support like by adding dedicated apps for niche platforms like Firestick and Kodi,

However, MullvadVPN doesn’t offer native apps for any sort of smartphone operating system whatsoever i.e. either iOS or Android, which is a big downer.

Even a wide majority of small scale providers offer their own Android app at the very least, but for some unknown reason, MullvadVPN has just not made it till now.

If you do want to use this VPN on a smartphone, you have to do it by configuring it through OpenVPN and that is too much of a lengthy process for many newbie or non-tech users to easily go through.

The app interface, although, is good enough, with easy access to major features like server selection, remaining account time indicator, settings etc. Vividness is the most prominent aspect of MullvadVPN’s Windows app, along with the graphics. Its simple, fast, easy to use and lightweight, so I definitely can call it a good enough app that you can easily work with on your desktop device.

But until MullvadVPN adds at least its native iOS and Android apps, I cannot justify it as offering great connectivity to the user.

MullvadVPN Support Review

In today’s world, VPNs are expected to offer live chat support, but MullvadVPN doesn’t seem to do so. I think its okay if a provider is offering email support only but that is if its answers through that platform are customized, highly informative and directed to solve user problems almost instantaneously.

But, their support, which was prompt to respond to my queries, left a lot to be desired in terms of giving quality answers to the questions posed by me.

One question was quite simple as I just inquired about the number of servers they while one was to ask them as to which servers exactly worked to unblock Netflix in the US.

The first reply was not too encouraging from their end:

Mullvad Support Review

I didn’t get the exact server count from them right away, neither did I get a good enough answer on Netflix, just a guess on past experiences, but it did work as is evident from my Netflix unblocking review on the service above.

And after I molded my query a bit more, MullvadVPN did revert back with a more well directed answer:

You must have noticed that I made no mention of the number of servers offered by the provider during the server review, well that’s because I wanted to show them to you here.

The provider offers a total number of 327 servers including WireGuard and Bridge servers.

I would rate their support as Okay, but not excellent and for that, they need to get the live chat feature.

Conclusion

MullvadVPN is a potentially ground breaking service, especially with its simplistic take on pricing, its integrity towards ensuring that users know how it doesn’t keep logs, its zipping fast speeds, its innovative take on how you create an account with it and other such exciting features.

A highly recommended service from my end, but do keep in mind that its support is slow and its based in a 14 Eyes country, but apart from that, this is one of the few ones that manages to hit the bull’s eye in the right areas more than the wrong ones.
