With all the embarrassing data leaks by social media giants, persistent malware attacks by ignoble hackers and loads of other equally dangerous threats permeating the online space, VPNs have become indispensable to the modern internet user in a bid to protect his/her privacy and security online.
But not every VPN provider is worth your attention. For it, a provider needs to offer the Best VPN service with all the right features, the right price, and the right security mix. In this review, we are looking at IPVanish, a popular VPN service, to check whether it lives up to its promises or falls short in some aspects.
One of the most well-known VPN providers out there, IPVanish does exactly what its name suggest i.e. protect your anonymity online by protecting your IP. This providers has all the right features any VPN user might be looking for like multiple protocol support, a legion of dedicated apps for compatible OS, 1000+ servers, AES-256 encryption and more.
It’s based in USA which might raise some eyebrows as the country is a not a secure location for parking your sensitive data. But still it practices an explicitly stated zero logs policy and till now, it hasn’t been subject to any embarrassing data leak incident so it can be considered secure by conventional VPN standards.
The prices are somewhat higher than they should be and there are more providers that offer even better feature packs at a lesser price, so that’s a let-down. But what it lacks in features, it makes up for in performance. IPVanish doesn’t suffer from frequent breakdowns, there are no IP leaks and the speeds are pretty consistent no matter at what time or for whatever purpose you are using it for.
We are not really a big fan off tiered pricing plans where access to certain features is restricted to those who choose the lower priced plans. For e.g. In VyprVPN, you can only access their exclusive Chameleon Protocol and Vypr Cloud features if you subscribe to their more expensive plan. But luckily, IPVanish doesn’t have a similar pricing regime in place.
All of its features are offered in all the pricing plans with the only difference between those plans being the duration of your subscription.
Stated Cost: $10.00
As with every other VPN provider, IPVanish’s monthly pricing plan is quite expensive. At $10/month, subscribing to this plan will cost you $120 on a yearly basis. You don’t get any kind of discount on this plan, because we haven’t really seen the provider offer its monthly plan for $11.99 ever. The 17% discount displayed here is just a really clever marketing ploy and nothing else. Not a very good plan to look forward to and only recommended if you need the VPN for some short term benefits.
Stated Cost: $26.99
We would have really liked it more had the provider offered a 6 month subscription plan instead of the 3 month plan as it that would have been much more feasible for the user.
But since it’s there, you can acquire it plan for $26.99 billed once every 3 months, making it cost you $8.99/month for each month of the subscription period. A pretty bad deal come to think of it and certainly not recommended as the monthly breakdown cost is way too high.
Again, only go for this plan if you have to service some urgent need as soon as possible.
Stated Cost: $77.99
The best plan of the lot, IPVanish’s yearly plan is what you should opt if you are willing to subscribe to its service. At $77.99/year, it will cost you $6.49/month, providing the best value for your money. But still, the pricing is too high as far as IPVanish’s feature pack is concerned. You can get a subscription at much better providers for a far lesser price, so we really believe that these prices should definitely travel south.
Currently, IPVanish offers two coupon codes. Their first code “OURBESTOFFER” provides a 25% discount on all pricing plans and gives you a really good deal if you are looking to make the prices match your budget even more.
Adding this IPVanish coupon code can bring the cost of the yearly plan from $77.99 to a much more reasonable $58.49.
The other IPVanish coupon code “SAVE20NOW”, will bring down prices by a margin of 20% when applied, but we seriously don’t understand the presence of this code when they are already offering the code with a 25% discount. IPVanish really needs to end this confusion and give their coupon codes a more uniformed outlook.
IPVanish currently does not offer a full-fledged free trial in the true sense of the term, instead what it does offer is a 7 day money back guarantee on all of its pricing plans and its doing itself a disservice by doing that. Free Trials are the biggest indicators of how much trust a provider puts in its service and offering them speaks volumes about the credibility of the features offered.
Not offering them gives a bad impression of the service and we would really recommend IPVanish to include one as soon as possible or risk losing customers to providers like NordVPN who not only offers a zero commitment free trial with all the features included but also has far better pricing plans.
Although it currently does not offer Bitcoin as a payment option, when we checked third party reviews of the service, we found out that IPVanish was previously offering Bitcoin as a payment option. That’s definitely a bummer as it denies the user the chance to pay for the pricing plans anonymously.
Only two payment methods are available currently. You can either pay through your credit card or opt for paying up through Paypal. According to our review, the payment methods are not enough and need to increase to provide more flexibility to the user.
Just like the more better VPN providers out there, IPVanish also offers dedicated compatible apps for popular OS like Windows, iOS, Mac and Android. What’s good here is that the provider offers a dedicated app for FireTV too and it works like a breeze. Dedicated support for niche platforms is always welcome and appreciated, so we really give the provider a thumbs up for adding the app to the mix.
Apart from that IPVanish offers setup guides for Linux, Chromebook, Windows Phone and routers. However, IPVanish does not provide much in terms of multiple protocol support on all platforms. More on that later in this article.
The provider claims that it’s the fastest growing Top Tier VPN in the world and the only place where this claim had the most resonance was in its server infrastructure.
IPVanish offers 1000+ servers in an impressive 60+ countries covering a majority of the world’s web landscape but we must say that the server count is bit skewed towards Europe and US.
There are just a total of 59 servers in Asia with Middle East getting a paltry 3 servers from
the provider. Compare that to Los Angeles, US which alone hosts 57 IPVanish servers and you will have a good idea of where the problem lies.
We would recommend the provider to add more servers in three places i.e. Middle East, Africa and Central Asia if it’s to attract more customers from these regions, which in the coming times will only be increasing.
The encryption standard offered by IPVanish if AES 256, which is pretty much the industry standard. But this encryption standard is only available on the FireTV, Windows, Mac, iOS and Android apps.
If you are planning to use IPVanish on Chrombook or a Windows Phone, you will only get AES-128 encryption on your internet connection.
Linux supports both, AES-128 and AES-256 grade encryption standards respectively.
While IPVanish does provide multiple protocol support, its relegated to some select OS only.
For e.g. on Windows and Mac, you can access OpenVPN, L2TP and PPTP protocols but not IPSec while on iOS you can only access IKEv2 and IPSec protocols.
Here is a list of the OS and the protocols supported on them:
|Operating System||Supported Protocol/s|
|Windows||OpenVPN, L2TP and PPTP|
|Mac||OpenVPN, IPSec and L2TP|
|iOS||IKEv2 and IPSec|
|Linux||OpenVPN and PPTP|
|ChromeBook||L2TP and IPSec|
We would recommend the provider to extend the choice users have in choosing different protocols on all platforms in order to allow them to exercise greater flexibility over their security options.
IPVanish advertises that it provides 24/7 support, but on the contrary there is no live chat feature. This is bad marketing on part of IPVanish and they need to replace it within something more acceptable i.e. one that matches their support readiness.
IPVanish’s primary mode of providing support is through its ticketing system, but even that is not fast enough according to modern customer support standards. We sent a query about installing VPN on Anonabox through its ticketing system and its been a good 8 hours since we are expecting a reply.
We will never call this “instant support unless we become deluded enough to consider 10 hour delays between a query and its resolution “instant”.
Speeds do go down somewhat from your original internet connection speed in any VPN. This is because of the load of the encryption and protocols, so we don’t take it as something out of the blue, unless it falls below the acceptable range. According to our speed tests of IPVanish on its different servers, we found it to be fast enough to power a good enough user experience.
However, on some of its servers, like in the UK, speeds went down a bit too far and we were certainly not impressed. Another thing we would like to add here is that IPVanish doesn’t work on unblocking Netflix US currently, and that’s perhaps its biggest flaw.
For Torrenting users, IPVanish can be a good option if you an average data consumer. For the heavy data consumers, the speeds can be a bit slow and erratic on most servers, so you do need to consider your preferences and needs before subscribing to IPVanish.
Kodi is our personal favourite when it comes to zeroing down on a home media platform for digital content consumption. This versatile software allows users to access anything from live news to cartoon shows and from major sporting events to the latest movies through hundreds of add-ons.
But, Kodi’s power can be amplified even more by using it under the cover of a Kodi VPN as it will allow you to unblock geo-restricted content from across the world.
IPVanish provides a wide number of compatible apps for different OS like Windows that run in the background allowing you the chance to use Kodi with full freedom.
However, IPVanish can also be installed manually on niche platforms like Smart TVs with ease.
Currently IPVanish provides support of its VPN for Kodi on these platforms:
Cracks are never safe and that’s why recommend our users to stay away from them always. They can contain anything from malware to dangerous viruses which can wreak havoc on your system if unpacked.
Currently, there is no credible crack available for IPVanish, and even if you do come across something claiming otherwise, we advise you to steer clear of it.
IPVanish offers some pretty decent features that include a Kill Switch to protect in case of internet disconnections, 1000+ VPN servers, SOCKS5 proxy, Military grade AES 256 encryption, multiple protocol support and the ability to use the VPN on up to five simultaneous devices,.
These features are good enough to allow IPVanish to qualify as one of the better VPNs out there. But there can be more additions definitely.
IPVanish still does not offer top grade security features like Double VPN, Onion over VPN and Split Tunnelling. These features are novelty in the VPN world and only a few top providers like NordVPN and PureVPN offer them. IPVanish needs to include at least two of them in its feature pack in order to justify its price and to add more worth to its service.
The login process at IPVanish does not need much in terms of explanation. All you need to do is, visit ipvanish.com and go to “My Account” (If you’ve already bought the subscription plan) and enter your VPN username and password in the available fields.
The same VPN user credentials will be required to log in on to any of its dedicated apps or initiate manual setup files.
Through the dedicated Windows app, using IPVanish VPN on your Windows OS is a seamless process. Here is how you can download and install this app in under 3 minutes:
Macs are great to use but they do need security to protect them from threats online. Here’s how you can setup IPVanish’s dedicated Mac app on your platform in a streamlined manner:

Nowhere is it more easier to install IPVanish’s dedicated app than on Android. Here is how you too can get it done with minimal effort:
Who doesn’t love niche support? We really do, especially for our favourite services like FireTV. IPVanish offers a dedicate app for the platform that makes it a whole lot easier to deploy the VPN and unblock geo-restricted content. But, before we proceed further, you need to know that this app won’t work properly on 1st generation Firestick devices.
Here’s step by step tutorial on how you can install IPVanish’s dedicated FireTV app easily:
Installing a VPN on a router can be quite a tricky thing and we recommend that you only go ahead with this route if you are capable enough of pulling it off without damaging the router.
IPVanish offers different setup tutorials for different kinds of routers which you can easily go through here .
Linux has a lot of bistros, so providing a dedicated app for its is an incredibly complex task. No popular provider has one but you can easily find out how to manually install a VPN on your own bistro in an easy manner.
IPVanish offers two types of Ubuntu VPN protocols i.e. Ubuntu PPTP and Ubuntu OpenVPN and you can access a step by step manual setup guide for these configurations on IPVanish’s website in the app section or on our own dedicated VPN review for Linux.
The Chromebook is a laptop computer by Google that runs on the Google Chrome OS. This laptop hails from a very different breed altogether and is a great option to indulge in if you are bored of your Windows or Mac OS too much by now.
The best part about the Chromebook is its uncomplicated and streamlined interface that allows you to do things in a much easier way than you could have done on other OS. The same holds true for setting up a VPN on this OS. Here’s a very simple guide on how to setup a VPN manually on Chrome OS:

Windows Phone are not that popular as compared to their more robust cousins i.e. Android and iOS, but still they do exist in such numbers that they are definitely the target of hacking attempts.
Therefore, you need a VPN to provide you with the ultimate security cover. Here’s how you can get that very security cover by installing IPVanish on your Windows Phone through this step by step guide:
On Reddit, users mostly highlighted those very issues that we pointed out during the course of this review. Do check the best reddit VPN as it gives you good yearly and other business packages.
The speeds get throttled on a lot of servers, Google prompts you with a captcha while using some servers, the chat support is immensely deceptive (It isn’t 24/7 by any sense of the term) and some other problems are among those regularly faced by a lot of users.
The provider needs to pick its game up big time. Its decent and secure, but modern day users are satisfied with nothing but the best, so if you can’t provide it, then be prepared for such rants on forums like Reddits, like this one below:
At TrustPilot, the situation is far worse. There are a total of 404 reviews generated by users and a cumulative rating of a single star to reflect the collective opinion contained in the majority of those reviews.
Users can have complaints about any service, but when something goes south, everyone can notice it. IPVanish has a lot of ground to cover to convert these rants into recommendations.

Is using VPN legal in USA?
Unless you use it for something sinister or criminal, using a VPN is perfectly legal in not just the US, but in most parts of the world.
Can IPVanish be used on multiple devices?
Yes. IPVanish allows you to access the service on 5 devices simultaneously.
How do I cancel my subscription to IPVanish?
If you are not satisfied with the service standards of IPVanish then you can definitely exercise your liberty as a user to cancel the subscription.Just head over to the website and log in to your account. Here, in the control panel, click on “Subscription”. You will now be able to see an option “I wish to cancel my subscription” at the bottom of this tab. Click on it and continue with process till you are done with all the formalities. Your account will now stand cancelled and invalid.
Wrapping things up, we would like to recommend the provider to add more features to its service and ramp up the performance of the existing ones in order to keep the customers coming in. The service has suffered some major let downs in the recent past and its high time that they buck themselves up and keep their good image in the VPN domain from being tarnished.
IPVanish is good, but in today’s ultra-competitive, user driven world, being good just won’t make the cut. You have to be extraordinary in order to engage more users and initiate a lasting brand loyalty.
ExpressVPN has exorbitantly priced plans but users go for it despite having cheaper options, only because of the trust and credibility the provider has generated through a stellar performance on all fronts.
IPVanish needs to follow the same path. We are satisfied by how it is currently, but there is definitively room for a lot of improvement.
If you have any comments or suggestions about our service and review standards, do comment in the thread below. We would be more than happy to engage with you!
