Surfshark VPN aced the limited assessment, conducted in November 2018, with nothing being found except for two minor vulnerabilities that were marked as “low severity”.

The second test was performed by the same company in 2021, this time focusing more on general security and the server infrastructure.

Protocols and Encryption Information

There is no support available for protocols like L2TP/IPSec or PPTP. Surfshark uses the industry-standard OpenVPN (TCP and UDP) protocol on all devices and platforms.

Leak Test Results

After checking 10 different Surfshark servers including the regions (US, UK, and Belgium), we detected no IP, WebRTC, or DNS leaks.

Surfshark came out unscathed from all these six leak tests to establish its credibility, as a highly suitable service for protection against prying eyes and copyright infringement hunters while torrenting.

Servers: Does Surfshark Have a Good Network Infrastructure in Italy?

Yes, in fact, Surfshark’s server network has grown tremendously over the years. From 800 servers in 50+ countries, it now hosts 3200 servers in 65 countries globally, which is quite an achievement for a newcomer.

The server infrastructure was previously skewed more towards North America and Europe. However, it has added newer servers in places like Turkey, India, Singapore, South Korea, New Zealand, Israel, South Africa, Chile, Costa Rica, and Canada among others.

Looking at this Surfshark VPN review of servers, it is clear the VPN is looking to expand, and rightly so. One of the most critical things that can make or break any VPN’s credibility in the market is the availability of its servers.

Fortunately, Surfshark works smoothly in China. Similar to NordVPN and ExpressVPN, the newcomer also offers a dedicated Chinese website to help residents in the country gain access to their product.

For expats, Surfshark VPN offers the NoBorders^TM mode, which bypasses “The Great Firewall” using obfuscation technology. Follow the steps below to activate the mode and become a Chinese local again:

Surfshark Uses both: Bare-Metal and Virtual Locations

I approached Surfshark’s live chat support to learn more about virtual/physical server offerings, but the representative completely denied having any fictitious locations.

Testing on their in-mum.prod.surfshark.com server revealed that it is actually located in Netherlands, Amsterdam.  Another one is Surfshark’s Vietnam – Ho Chi Minh City server, which routes from Belgium through a datacenter located in Netherlands.

When I approached the provider again with these findings, they said that they offer both: virtual and physical. The chat support exec also mentioned that they are planning to inculcate a new feature within their apps.

One that will tell users as to which server is a virtual one and which one is an actual bare-metal one, similar to how other providers do it. Most providers have a (V) sign on their server list, signaling a virtual server.

As of October 2023, Surfshark VPN had adopted the practice and now clearly marks all virtual locations in their apps, be it on iOS, Android, Mac, or Windows. 

What is the best country to use on Surfshark?

The best VPN country depends on why you’re using a VPN in the first place. However, here are some of the countries that offer strong internet privacy laws, good speeds, and freedom of speech protection.

Why is Surfshark not working on Mac in Italy?

If Surfshark isn’t working, there may be an issue with the app. To obtain the most recent version of the app, remove and reinstall it. You may also try restarting your network and shutting down your device to solve the problem.

Why is YouTube not working with Surfshark in Italy?

If the IP address assigned to you by Surfshark has already been identified and blocked by YouTube TV, then the streaming service will not work.

A different server would give you a new IP address, and if the streaming service hasn’t blocked that one, then YouTube TV will work with Surfshark again.

The main screen consists of 5 main tabs, including VPN, Alert, Antivirus, Search, and Settings.

Although there’s no map interface, the server locations are represented with the country names in the form of a list with the respective flags.

Two options are available to connect to the “Fastest” or the “Nearest” locations.

The Virtual Servers are marked with a “V” on each server. And if you have a favourite server, you can star it and it will be available in the “Favorites” sections.

macOS

The Surfshark macOS has two VPN versions. One is the VPN downloaded from Surfshark’s official website, and the other is from Apple’s App Store.

The interface is less extensive than the Windows app, and it lacks certain features, that too depending on which version you’ve downloaded.

Surprisingly, the website version has fewer features than the App Store version.

If you’ve downloaded the website version, then you’ll only find IKEv2 and WireGuard in the protocols.

However, the Apple App Store version offers both plus OpenVPN (UDP/TCP).

Nonetheless, the macOS version lacks plenty of features like,

• Whitelister – Split tunneling tool that allows you to turn off the VPN for some apps.
• NoBorders – a feature that allows you to use the app conveniently in highly restrictive regions like China.

No doubt the macOS version is a little short on features, but it is still a solid VPN choice to hide your online identity and bypass geo-restrictions with your Mac system.

Linux

Surfshark is one of the few VPNs that offers a GUI interface to Linux users.

You can view the recently used servers, mark your favorite server, and access the MultiHop feature with ease.

While the GUI interface is only available for a few distros, Surfshark has promised to release it for more in coming times.

Android

The Android app is available on the Google Play Store and is convenient to use.

It inherits all the specifications from the Windows version. The app doesn’t lack in any features and there’s even an additional feature called GPS Spoofing.

iOS

The iOS app of Surfshark is similar to the Android version. However, some features which are available on Android are lacking on iOS, like the Whitelister and GPS Spoofing.

Nonetheless, the VPN offers other features that are rarely available in the mobile versions, for example, the kill switch and the WireGuard protocol.
