5 Fastest VPNs for Netflix & Torrenting But Why NordVPN is Very Slow?

Hamza Shahid November 29, 2018

When it comes to leveraging the utmost level of online security and privacy, VPNs definitely manage to develop quite the reputation. Not only do they mask your identity, but they also guarantee complete anonymity from government agencies, copyright trolls, and anti-piracy hunters. However, apart from privacy, there is also a need to leverage faster speeds for streaming and gaming, due to local ISPs imposing bandwidth throttling. If you are suffering from poor internet performance, you will have to rely on speed-optimized VPNs. For that, read this detailed Fastest VPN guide from Best VPN!

Blazing-Fast VPNs for 2018

Most people are not aware that upon activation a VPN, the web traffic routes from your computer to an encrypted tunnel via a server from the VPN provider, hiding all your incoming/outgoing traffic from local ISPs. This extra layer of encryption that adds to your connection, in reality, degrades the internet speed, as the physical distance to the equation increases. Now, while this does boost your overall anonymity and privacy online, in short, it hinders you network speeds too.

So, What is with all this Fastest VPN talk?

Well, using a virtual private network should not necessarily mean that you receive slow speeds all day, every day! There is a reason why users have a lot of variety in the marketplace, especially when selecting a VPN. Different providers have varied strengths that position them higher in specific segments. For instance, where one VPN may offer superb privacy, the other provides unmatched unblocking capabilities.

If one VPN is praised for its remarkable features to engage in P2P/Torrenting, the other may be more focused on providing a seamless gaming experience. All in all, you can find many choices that meet the budgetary requirements and other more serious needs. Subsequently, there is a species of what we call the Fastest VPNs, which are optimized entirely for providing maximum performance to their users. This is what this guide hopes to provide detailed information for!

Right now we recommend ExpressVPN to our readers to enjoy hassle-free streams and torrenting with ExpressVPN fast servers selection across the globe.

What Do You Understand By Fast VPN?

By now, you are probably aware of the different types of VPNs available in the market for meeting your specific needs. So, what exactly goes into selecting or labeling one provider as a “FAST VPN”? Well, even if you are a little tech-savvy, you should be aware that a fast VPN will focus on all facets of PERFORMANCE. As a result, they are prone to offer more information about ping rates, download speeds, and upload speeds, while ensuring the numbers DO NOT DISAPPOINT YOU.

How Do We Test VPNs for Speed?

For our audience members, who are confused about how we test different VPNs for speed, let us inform that we adopt a very thorough procedure. We use a 100 Mbit/s internet connection for analyzing the download/upload speeds and ping rates of each VPN, which are tested by various SaaS and our personal servers too. The list is updated every 24 hours for maximum accuracy and the numbers are averaged out to give a speed score to each VPN. The website we also use for testing speeds includes Speed of.me, Google’s test, TestMy.net, Speedtest.net, Bandwidth Place, Fast.com, and ISP Speed Tests.

Aspects that Help You Find Adrenaline-Pumped VPNs

When it comes to assessing the performance of a VPN, you need to analyze certain aspects – to ensure you get nothing but the FASTEST. BestVPN.co takes the reviewing process of every provider quite seriously, but more importantly, aims to make the life of our audience easier. As such, we have highlighted the aspects you need to analyze when doing your own research on a suitable VPN!

Local ISP Speed

It does not matter how fast of a VPN you use if you do not have a high-speed internet connection. The slower speed you receive from your ISP, the slower your VPN will work. You cannot expect to leverage 50 Mbps speeds on a 10 Mbps connection. Remember that speed loss is always more noticeable in systems that have poor speeds, to begin with.

Server Load

If a VPN server is crowded with many users, then you can obviously expect a reduction in the speeds. Imagine 100 people sharing a one Gigabit network. On an average, a person would only receive 10 Mbps per person. This is why some users opt for dedicated IPs, as they can afford more server bandwidth.

Proximity

When connecting to a VPN, always try finding a server nearby your country. Speeds will always be faster in nearby places. Bear in mind signals deteriorate over distance, so where you will get 95 Mbps on a server that closer, you will only get around 5 to 10 Mbps on a server located on another side of the world.

Encryption

When VPNs first came into being, PPTP connections were quite famous. They allowed for instant unblocking of geo-restrictions, but sadly they lacked in offering good security. Later when new protocols came out with stronger encryption, there was a reduction in speeds, as encryption usually adds extra data to the incoming/outgoing traffic.

VPN Protocol

The choice of protocols also affects the performance of a VPN provider. For instance, where the TCP protocol in OpenVPN is generally slower, as it has to verify the receipt of all data packets and resend lost packets, the UDP protocol tends to be way faster – since it is more efficient in the same process. So, protocols do indeed have an impact on speed and latency.

Ping Rate

Ping and latency issues often trace back to bandwidth throttling from your local ISP or some rather petty problems with the router or LAN cables. Nevertheless, if you connect to a server with an already high ping rate, the speeds will reduce drastically. This is because a VPN adds additional latency to your connection. You need a STRONG and high-speed network.

Download/Upload Speed

Different servers will have varied download/upload speeds, based on all the above factors. IF you want to receive high-speeds, make sure to test different servers out from a multitude of companies – while experimenting with your network to see if you can boost the overall performance.

5 Fastest VPN Services

By looking at the average speeds above, you probably have a good idea about the VPNs that offer the fastest service. However, since it is not only the speed that matters, but also a range of other factors like privacy, reliability, support, features, and servers availability – you need to think broader when selecting a VPN. For this reason, we have listed the top 5 VPNs for Speed and overall performance below:

ExpressVPN

Based in the British Virgin Islands, ExpressVPN enjoys a prominent reputation in the marketplace, thanks to its unbreakable privacy and security. Even the Turkish authorities could get nothing from the provider during an incident involving the VPN. However, if you think that anonymity is the only thing ExpressVPN offers, you are wrong. ExpressVPN sets quite the bar for downloading and uploading speeds, hence why it enjoys the top of our rankings. Albeit, the consistency may vary, due to server load. Generally speaking though, we experience smooth streaming and P2P/Torrenting with fast speeds throughout!

Upon testing the performance, we received fast, consistent speeds that were not affected greatly by selecting different servers or increased network traffic. This could be because VyprVPN manages its own network, due to which it is available to deliver excellent speeds always! Pricing is cheap too, and the apps are quite user-friendly.

The best part of all: we received incredibly low levels of latency, which makes it a perfect choice, especially if you want to indulge in gaming or P2P/Torrenting. One of the best things about PureVPN is that the support team is quite helpful in providing relevant information about different facets of the VPN. For instance, while searching for PureVPNs fastest servers, we came across a support page, where the provider states that speeds may vary depending on location, nodes connected, and protocols/encryption selected. Some fast servers for manual configurations listed by the VPN include:

However, it seems the provider has definitely stayed true to its name, offering exceptional speeds for streaming and torrenting with low latency. The VPN offers a Channel Bonding feature, which even combines fixed broadband, cellular, and Wi-Fi connections into one to boost your overall network speed. This is perhaps one of the only VPNs in the marketplace that offers such a feature, which is essential for users who cannot tolerate slow internet for browsing, let alone other aspects of online entertainment.

Though we wished to see some better results from Speedify, the VPN still managed to do quite well, staying true to its name. We think there could’ve been an issue of Server Load, but a 31.29% difference is definitely not bad for a freemium VPN. No IP and DNS leaks were detected so far. We still need to test the speeds after activating the Channel Bonding feature though!

Why is NordVPN Very Slow??

Plenty of reviews from NordVPN users revolve around its slow speed. It seems that people are struggling with using the VPN properly. Though we have tested all NordVPN’s apps and received good speeds each time, the problem could be broader. For instance, a slow internet connection will automatically mean you will receive poor speeds when using the VPN.

However, if everything else works smoothly and only NordVPN is giving trouble. We do have a solution for you. The process involves tinkering with the protocol settings. If you use OpenVPN, go for the UDP protocol to receive faster speeds. Other tips include restarting your modem/router, changing server location, adjusting your encryption level, and turning off other local security software.

Free VPNs that are Fast

At BestVPN.co, we strictly advise our user-base not to fall into the trap of Free VPN, as most will have their foots deep-rooted into shady business practices to pay for server maintenance, app updates, customer support and other costs relating to hosting a VPN. However, since not everyone wants to invest in premium providers, and it can get a little frustrating to pay for a service if you only mean to use it temporarily – free VPNs are a good choice regardless.

Windscribe

Windscribe is a Canadian-based service that has been ruling the marketplace of Free VPNs for quite some time now. Despite being FREE, the VPN offers a well-designed website, which provides access to intuitive apps for leveraging max security. Though the 10GB bandwidth limit is standard on a free plan, upon testing the provider on its four basic servers, we received quite the amazing speeds. This was using the FREE servers and not the premium ones. So, we definitely advise using Windscribe!

Fastest VPN Free

Pros

  1. 10GB Bandwidth Limit
  2. Chrome Browser Extension
  3. Responsive Customer Support
  4. Fast Speeds via IKEv2 Encryption
  5. Easy-to-Use Native Apps

Cons

  1. No Live Chat

Hotspot Shield Free

Hotspot Shield is a US-based provider of VPN services, which keeps on gaining and losing its fame, due to a range of issues with its VPN app. However, if it is just for temporary use, as most FREE VPNs are – then it is a great choice for the masses. The provider offers remarkable speeds for streaming and P2P/Torrenting with low latency. The only problem is that you have a 750 MB of data limit per day, which is definitely not enough for browsing/streaming or perhaps doing anything online!

How We Test VPNs for Speed

Pros

  1. 750MB Daily Allowance
  2. Automatic Kill Switch
  3. No DNS Leaks Detected
  4. Chrome Extension
  5. Split Tunneling Available

Cons

  1. Slow Customer Support

Hide.me

Hide.me offers both paid and free services, just like the names mentioned above. The only difference is that it gives you 2GB of data per month to play with. Other features you receive with the FREE plan include three server locations (Netherlands, Canada, and Singapore), connect to one device, apps for Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, and even Google Chrome. Upon testing the service, we received good enough speeds for a FREE provider. The server load was too massive, hindering most of the experience. Not bad though from an overall performance perspective.

Blazing-Fast VPNs for Netflix

Fastest VPN for Netflix

Netflix is becoming quite clever as time passes, restricting its user-base from accessing the complete list of titles, since they are located in different countries. If that were not enough, they immediately started blocking VPN services, to prevent users from accessing the US version with the complete database of movies/TV shows. This discriminatory behavior goes against the freedom of the internet, hence why we advise using these Best VPNs for Netflix, which also combine strong performance and speeds.

Fast Speeds and VPN protocols

When it comes to using VPNs that offer maximum speeds, you need to check out their supported protocols list. The best providers will provide users with a variety in the selection process. Bear in mind that different protocols use varied encryption keys and hash authentication. Below we describe the three most famous protocols; how they operate, and which one is the best for leveraging fast SPEEDS!

PPTP

Abbreviation for “Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol”, PPTP now comes under the “obsolete” list, as it does not integrates the poor level of encryption for protecting your identity online. It has existed for over a decade and uses the TCP control channel, combined with Generic Routing Encapsulation for transferring PPP packets from one location to another.

L2TP

In the computer network, the L2TP is known as “Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol”, which is usually combined with IPSec for providing maximum security via AES-256 bit encryption, as it does not provide any sort of confidentiality or protection by itself. The protocol is a vital party of delivery of services by ISPs, and perfect for smartphone users specifically!

OpenVPN

Released in 2001, OpenVPN is one of the youngest yet most reliable and strongest protocols available in the marketplace, utilizing SSL/TLS for key exchange. It can operate on both: Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and User Datagram Protocol (UDP), which makes your traffic indistinguishable and extremely difficult to block/detect. It also offers the maximum speed from all protocols!

When it comes to gaining information or unbiased opinions about a myriad of topics, Reddit undoubtedly exists as one of the most amazing communities. This is why we always analyze responses on Reddit, even for our VPN-research. Below is a comment from a Redditor, responding about a question relating to Fast VPNs

Fastest VPN FAQs

Since users can face lots of issues or may have plenty of concerns about using fast VPNs to unblock and stream at high speeds, we have created an FAQ of all the common questions we receive below:

Is Using a VPN Faster?

As mentioned earlier, when you connect to a VPN, your traffic starts passing through a secure tunnel that uses encryption for protecting the incoming/outgoing data. This added encryption to your connection will reduce speeds. However, in circumstances where your internet starts lagging, due to geo-blocks or other unknown reasons, VPNs work wonders in boosting your speeds by shifting to different locations!

Can VPN Slow Down Internet Speed?

Upon connecting to a VPN, the web traffic routes from your computer to an encrypted tunnel via a server from the VPN provider, hiding all your incoming/outgoing traffic from local ISPs. This extra layer of encryption that adds to your connection, in reality, degrades the internet speed, as the physical distance to the equation increases. However, different sites/services may work faster with different servers!

Is a Fast VPN Worth It?

Yes, using a Fast VPN is definitely worth the try, as they not only meet all demands for privacy/security – but they also go the extra mile in boosting overall performance. Just make sure you select the right VPN from the recommended list given above to enjoy streaming and P2P/Torrenting in the most convenient and fastest way possible!

*After testing speeds with VPN working in the background, ExpressVPN showed impressive  results that makes it the most Blazing-Fast VPN

Wrapping Things Up

As the internet gets divided into various sections, after the Net Neutrality laws being repelled, you can now expect an increase in bandwidth throttling, which will affect your browsing/streaming/torrenting experience. You will have to opt for special packages to meet your needs, and this is quite alarming, to say the least. We hope the above guide mitigates some of the drastic changes by connecting to Speedy VPNs. 2 Responses to 5 Fastest VPNs for Netflix & Torrenting But Why NordVPN is Very Slow?

  1. Francis

That’s a quality list. I’ve tried a few of the mentioned VPNs before, but right now I’d add one more to it. I’ve been using Surfshark lately, because my friend who is a total geek told me it’s one of the fastest in industry at the moment. What can I say? It’s fast and works with any streaming service I’ve tried so far (Netflix, BBC iPlayer). Not much else I want from a vpn, except from privacy. They do say “no logs”, considering that they are based in Switzerland, it makes sense I guess. It’s still a relatively new provider, so I’ll have to see how it goes in the near future.

Thanks for commenting Francis. I have already reviewed Surfshark, but i’ll analyze it for performance again. The positive review really helps us in ranking services too, and judging by the way there is always news about old, reputable providers turning to be scams, we are leaning more towards checking out new providers. Keep following us! 🙂
