Malaysia might be one of the most beautiful places on earth but it has some of the strictest censorship laws. The track record of free and open access to the internet in Malaysia has not been good over the years. There are numerous websites, online services, and web content that are geo-restricted due to these internet safety laws and only Malaysia VPN could easily bypass those laws.

Many of these measures come in place due to inappropriate content easily accessible over the internet. Malaysia have adopted such strict censorship laws to prevent access to such content, stop hate speeches against the government, prevent social uprising, and with increasing religious conservatism, these laws will become stricter with the passage of time.

In addition to limited internet freedom, there are various popular streaming services like Netflix that are geo blocked in Malaysia. These services provide a better alternative to your standard cable subscription and more streaming options. So how to you access these services and get rid of internet censorship in Malaysia? Head on to read our review of Malaysian list of VPNs to find out which outweighs the other.

malaysian vpn review

Famous streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu, Pandora, BBC iPlayer, ITV, Amazon Prime, and much more are not available in Malaysia. When you try to access them from Malaysia, you will be presented with geo-restriction notice. In order to gain access to these services, you need a VPN Malaysia.

This is where the widespread of VPN servers come into play. Using these servers, you effectively change your location to any destination you want. For instance, if you want to watch shows or movies on Netflix, all you have to do is establish a connection to the VPN servers located in United States and your original IP address will be masked and replaced with a US IP address; allowing you to access Netflix in Malaysia.

So the next time you want to access streaming service to enhance your online entertainment options and you run into the problem of geo restrictions, don’t forget a Malaysia VPN.

Bypass Internet Censorship via VPN for Malaysia

We have pondered upon the fact that Malaysia has some of the strictest censorship laws. When we look at some of the cases throughout history, you will find that content available over the internet is either filtered or blocked by various governmental agencies.

  • As of January 2014, the Malaysian government blocked various political websites. If try to open these blocked websites, you will be accompanied by the following message: “This website is not available in Malaysia as it violates the National law.”
  • In 2006, all Malaysian news blogs would have to be registered with Ministry of Information. This announcement was made in order to filter out bloggers that were trying to promote disorder in Malaysia.
  • There are various Facebook pages and YouTube videos are the blocked throughout Malaysia. These pages contained critical information about the government and inappropriate religious content due which they were blocked by local ISPs.
  • Malaysia has strong censorship criteria for content available over the internet or shown on television and it will censor any content that contains kissing onscreen, nudity, homosexuality, graphic violence, vulgarity language, and pornography.
  • Based on these criterions, popular shows such as ‘South Park’ and ‘Family Guy’ are banned and censored throughout Malaysia for showing inappropriate content (sexual content, vulgar language, violence, and offence behavior).
  • Similarly, few episodes of shows Glee, Friends, and Ally McBeal are also blacklisted throughout Malaysia.

Judging by these facts, the Malaysian government is very busy trying to fight inappropriate content and censor them at ISP levels. However, with a Malaysian VPN by your side, you can bypass these internet censorship laws and access services without any fear of being blocked.

Which Malaysian ISPs support VPN?

There are different ISPs providing internet services to internet users in Malaysia. These ISPs include V-telecom, Celcom, Digi, Maxis, Umobile, VDSL, and many others. These ISPs support VPN providers if they do not violate Malaysian laws and work in accordance with the rules of telecoms regulator MCMC.  In the near future, ISPs could start tracking the online activities of internet users in Malaysia because there is a possibility of new data retention laws.

Watch EPL Online in Malaysia

For all the EPL fans residing in Malaysia, you can watch your favorite match online on Fox Sports and Astro.

Malaysia has revamped its local data retention laws and rigid internet censorship regulations over the past year experiencing a decline in their internet freedom rankings from 2015. The Malaysian government is already taking measures to make the local cyberspace reserved & controlled. The reason behind the Malaysian government’s massive takeover of the local internet is due to increased online discussions and protests over Government corruption.

According to the UN resolution, internet freedom is the basic right but in Malaysia, this basic right is being misused. All such initiatives are being taken to silence netizens criticism of the Malaysian Prime Minister & his corrupt cabinet. The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is one of the government’s arms that monitor’s online activities & active netizens under the jurisdiction of the CMA (Communication and Multimedia Act).

Recently the Malaysian parliament has begun considering amendments in CMA to give more strength to Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission. Under these powers, the MCMC would be able to make Internet Service Providers criminally liable for the behavior of their customers’ activities.

The MCMC blocked the journalism website “Sarawak Report” because it published a news report regarding $681 million corruption scandal involving the Malaysian PM Najib Razak, his cabinet, and an international bank.

In addition to limited internet freedoms Facebook which is one of the most famous social media platforms being targeted by the Malaysian government. Correction ! or at least a clarification.
I recently said various VPN’s no longer work in accessing Netflix. I’ve just done some more experimenting and it seems they MIGHT work (AirVPN tested successfully) if you have a totally clean browser. In this case, Chrome’s Incognito did not work as it is detected and Netflix asks that you turn it off. Hmmmmmm…so…I used the normal Chrome but not before disconnecting my Google account and cleaned the History/cookies etc. It Worked!
This may work with the other VPN’s I specifally had found not to work before. They were PureVPN, Astrill & Cyberghost. Can anyone test these please?
Sorry for the incomplete info earlier,

    • Ameer

Chrome is a PRIVACY catastrophe, one of the most ridiculous browsers being used today, absolutely hate it and dont want people to use it either.

I always have two browsers on my devices, Mozilla is recommended i always have it on both mobile & PC. I would suggest try Maelstrom browser or COmodo Ice Dragon for Netflix, there is just no way Google DNS can mess with those two.

I have tested PureVPN with Netflix US, UK and Netherlands works like a gem.
Astrill works good in the USA but does not give good speed for UK and European Netflix domains.

  2. Nizar

I thought netflix nowaday didnot allow it user to use VPN to get their services?
